Storing mushrooms...here's the situation.

What is a good non-freezer way of storing mushrooms? They are cracker dry.
There is a nice, air tight container that usually is used to store the mushrooms in the freezer.
However, a family member watches our son for a couple of hours every weeknight, and I'm worried about them discovering the mushrooms out of curiousity when they see this container in the freezer while getting a popscicle or something for my son.
Are there any other long-term storage solutions for dried mushrooms not including a freezer/fridge? Can they be put in a dark box in a closet at around 75-77 degrees? How long would they last that way?

I have stored dried shrooms in a ziplock bag, a quart jar, paper bag, as well as many other containers. They all seem to work well, as long as the shrooms are dried. The longest I kept dried shrooms was for about 9 months, I didn't notice any drop in potency. You should be fine with the dark box in the closet.

I get the smallest glass jars I can, little jam jars from hotels are good. Then cram the powder in tight. I microwave or slow oven cook dry rice until it is very dehydrated and put it in to fill up any room and act as a desiccant.

It isn't powder, they are whole, cracker-dry shrooms. Thanks though frank and blackout.

you can get a small vacume sealer that works on canning jars then just store them in quart or half-gallon jars

Hey agar, do you think they'd be okay in a ziplock within a ziplock with as much air squeezed out short of vaccum sealing it?

that should work fine. you can also go to wal-mart, or walgreens and pick up a vaccuum sealer for about $30 that comes with different sized bags that you just put in the little machine and within 30 seconds, you have a vaccuum seal. Also, how long are you planning on storing these?

No. You need vaccum bags, ziplock bags, even if you put them in a couple, over time will absorb oxygen. If your only talking a few weeks or months or something thats probably fine, although I'd put some desiccant packets in the outer bag. That might even help them store longer...but they wont store for years or anything like if you seal them.
