Second attempt ruined by blue mold
    #4316423 - 06/20/05 10:54 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

On my first attempt I soaked cracked corn for 24 hours, and PC'ed for 70 minutes. They were colonized about 60% when I went to shake the jars... the next day after the shaking all of the white fuzz had died.

This time I soaked the corn for 12 hours, and PC'ed for 70 minutes again.. but none of it ever colonized... I just got a shitload of blue mold in all of my jars after 2 weeks.

Humidity in my TIT setup is 60%, and temperature is 85-87F.

Going to make another attempt with the last of my cracked corn, soaking for 24 hours and PC'ing for 90 minutes... I'm also going to wipe down the inside of tub with a water/bleach solution.

Strain is B+ and I have about 5cc's left.

I would suggest you use WBS instead of CC. It is far better, IMHO.

Does it just colinize faster or is it more resistant to contams?

It absorbs water better, shakes better, breaks up better, colonizes better, has better nutrients, produces better mushroms when you fruit off of it, spawns great to poo, and its like 5 bucks for huge 20 lb bags...

Even though you have to throw about half of it away (the sunflower seeds). Yeah, I love WBS too.

I'm gonna try and find pure millet somewhere.

*sigh*

Once again, you do NOT have to through the sunflower seeds away...they provide lignins and oils good for cubensis in amounts under 5% (which is any birdseed you should be getting). And if you did throw away the sunflower seeds, its not half, its 5%..usually less. With proper sterilization WBS, with nothing removed works just fine...i wish theyd remove all that stuff from the FAQ's..

um, the Penningtons WBS from Walmart that I got contains roughly 50% sunflower seeds. Maybe you're getting better bags or whatever but the ones I get are waaaaay more than 5%, like I said, it's about half.

Then your getting the wrong stuff...you should be getting WBS that contains 5% sunflower seeds or less.

I've tried 7 or 8 brands...all of them havnt had the seeds removed (including penningtons from my walmart).

I wanna get bags of 100% millet if I can find them. Also big bags of rye should be available at farmer's seed stores I'd imagine.

If there is a PETCO store anywhere around you.

Try BIRD BASICS WBS.

$8 for a 40 lb bag.

Just a thought.. people say they must remove most (not necessary all) of the "floater seeds". What if you placed the WBS in a food processor or coffee grinder to break them up so there is no air packet inside. Could that help?

One of the reasons I prefer WBS spawn is that because it is a mix of seed. It is more forgiving about moisture content - over any single seed like straight millet, or rye grain.

The mix makes it so, as some seeds absorb more moisture & some other being differant size or consistancy absorb less - one balances out the other.

If you use straight millet, rye or any single type of seed or grain, if you get the moisture content wrong (to dry - or - to wet), it is wrong (period) - as there is no mix to balance it all out.

i think if you ground up everything you would have a solid block inside the jar(after colonization of course) and it would take away from the nifty shaking feature of the whole grains/corn/wbs.On top of that, I'm pretty sure that mycelium need some sort of aeration in the substrate kinda similar to plants.

Yea you're right about it being harder to shake. I thought it could be a fix to the floater problem though.

Right now I'm doing BRF cakes and spawning to h/poo. i think next time I'll do the WBS, I heard its good when spawning, better then the BRF cakes anyways.

My cakes are taking so friggin long... gonna be 5 weeks total before I can use them. Too much water in the mix... grrr.
