Casing feels like a solid.

after about a week or so in the incubator, i saw some mycel. pop up in a spot or two. I been spraying it and trying to fruit it with lots of air exchange and the right humidity, but i just checked and it feels like the casing layer is a solid brick. Its hard as a rock. Whats up with this? I took a fork and chewed it all up to get it nice and rough and not solid like a brick again, and noticed that it really wasn't colonized at all. So i put it back in the incubator to see what happens. What do you people think i should do?

I am really really hoping to shoot for a july 4th harvest but it doesnt look like its going to happen...:(

Uh..  :confused:

You have a casing? .. and its been in an incubator for over a week? You should incubate a casing for like a day or two.. and start fruiting right away. Sounds like you have major overlay. If you scratched the casing with a fork already.. then do a light sprinkle of casing over that. And cold shock it. Right now. Then get it in your fruiting chamber with 95%+ humidity. Forget what people say that you don't need that much with casings. Just get it up. Add light .. probably like 14 on /8 off until you get pins.

there is no overlay. Its like the peatmoss and verm decided to become concrete or something. When i scratched it up there was not that much mycelium. Its like it couldn't penetrate it.

Im no expert, but im pretty sure your casing layer is saposed to be pretty airy.. Def dont want it to be compressed.
