My first case of Cambos took about 10-11 days to pin if memory serves and we have similar setups. It was 13 before I had my first harvest.

its overlay

sterilize a fork and scratch the surface with it.

then put another thin layer of casing material over it.

make sure and fruit it....just as the mycelium is starting to come through the casing layer.

K, so I have to scratch it, but its been in the fruiting chamber for like 9/10 days now, is that too late, and how much do I scratch, the whole casing layer or just the really white spots, then what do I do with it, incubate then fruit or just leave it in the fruiting chamber. How much is this going to set me back then.

I disagree roadkill, that casing is a little over grown but not overlayed. 8-9 days is not that long to wait for pins. I think the better bet woould be to just let it pin.
All i see there is some rhizomorphic growth and funky primordia growth. That casing is not in a bad enough state to justify deep scratching the casing layer.

Not necessarily, rhizpmorphic growth is a aggressive form a mycellium. When doing agar plates that is what you want to isolate out. The funky primordia is usually a genetic thing.

Overlay by definition is a layer of dead mycellial growth on top of the casing layer that is inhibiting new mycellium to form pins. What you have is a overgown casing. Where the casing surface is covered in living mycellium, this can lead to overlay, but you dont have too bad of a case.

Keep your casing under fruiting condition, lots of fresh air, light, and a tem of 70-75. Deep scratching it and putting a new casing layer on it will just push your time until pins farther back.

Anybody else have a comment. Are you with Roadkill or hawksapprentice, I hope hawks apprentice.
Hawks apprentice says I have overgrown casing, if thats the case, are those spots still going to produce mushrooms.

your opinion.

---

I like nice pinsets and nice flushes...and he isn't going to get them with overlay like this.

matted mycelium growth like in his picture is overlay...it's not a little over grown...its way over grown.

you don't want alot of colonization on your casing layer...that isn't the purpose of a casing layer.

I have fruitied casings like that many times and have found that in over all weight after harvest they are very comparable. And i have seen much worse overgrowth than that. since your at the point your at i would just fruit it and leave it. Is this an optimal situation no, but i prefer to leave them alone as much as possible in the stage your at.
