Bad Yahoo, bad!: resolved, thanks browndustin!
    #4315084 - 06/19/05 10:37 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Hey, Yahoo is loading incredibly slow and appears like it Style Sheet isn't loading with it.  Every other site that i have tried loads as usual.

(this is how it looks, and it takes at least 10 mins for anything to happen)

I'm running Firefox 1.0.4 on winxp, with dialup connect with zone alarm firewall.  Ran virus scan, none found. reinstalled firefox, no change, tried on IE, same thing.

This weekend i was at a friends house and yahoo loaded quite normally, so i conclude the problem is not them.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

It's working for me.

Try clearing your cache and maybe your cookies too. That usually fixes weird problems like these.

does zone alarm have any sort of advert. blocking? if so, try disabling that.

Hey guys, i've cleared the cache/cookies/saved info stuff, no change.  I looked through zone alarm and i didn't find anything about advert blocking either.  I got the free(ie least options) version of zone alarm.  :frown:

ok, shutdown zonealarm, no change either, IE Netscape and Firefox are all having trouble with yahoo. Its important fo me to access as beside my personal mail, i also have a domain name through yahoo so i need to check my mail through that> I am able to access my domain mail through netscapes email pop client, which was a big relief. I just would really like to access via the web.

ok, then there must be something else blocking the site. have you modified your HOSTS file perhaps? Do you have anything else running that might be blocking websites?

lol yeah, yahoo sucks. I used to use yahoo religiously back in the day, but I haven't been to their site in eons.

Run spybot and if you have service pack 2, maybe go as far as to do a winsock reset. It's easy as shit.

Start > run > cmd > netsh int ip reset all (Press enter or return)

It'll jump down a line with a fresh command prompt

Type in: netsh winsock reset (Press enter or return)

Now close the prompt and restart your computer.

It could be from broken shit left in your winsock file from zone alarm. Their true vector penis snapped in the beginning of june so it could be that. Or it could just be crappy zone alarm, it used to be good but it's sliding.

Someone else's suggestion will probably fix things, so try their suggestions first. But if all else fails...

OK, ran spybot, it showed tracking cookies and registry entries, the registry entries were for my kodak camera software, so i only deleted the cookies. This didn't help, so i followed browndustin's suggestion and did the winsock reset. No dice either. I'm really at a loss here. So far we know what its not, which itself is a big help. I greatly appreciate all the suggestions.

Uhh.. weird.

I dunno, I'd probably uninstall firefox again, rip any core files and reg keys and try that. I usually do the stupidest things on my home computer first of all so I'd probably wait for another shroomer to reply.

**Addendum**

Spybot's pretty good in the sense that it checks your host files and reg keys even, I never used it because of it's god awful gui but am becoming an advocate. That aside, try running crap cleaner just because it's generally good for your system. That's really odd though. I honestly would optimize your internet explorer settings again (inetcpl.cpl in the run window, clean everything again and set things back to their default settings) although it probably won't fix this issue.

Do you know if you did that update on june 10 for zone alarm? It screwed up a lot of computers, something to do with true vector this and that. I'd probably uninstall zone alarm nonetheless. I want to know what fixes your problem.. good luck, man.

I downloaded and ran Crap Cleaner...338 something registry entires needed fixing,  and now, finally, Yahoo is finally working right!

Thank you very much everyone, especially browndustin, 5 glorious shrooms to you!!

I discovered other sites were also being affected by the garbage in my registry.  My computer is now so sterile from trying out all the suggestions, i can probably grow mushrooms out of it by now!  Anyway, thanks again all for the help

Hey man, no problem. Glad things are working out.

Careful with ccleaner though.

The initial scan of a computer that's been used for a year or so will typically show shitloads of reg keys that are unused, anything from uninstalled programs, to keys left from older builds of programs. Most of the time it's all bullshit and you can rip it all out, but back up your registry just to be sure! Name it the date and time that you've backed it up, because a few times I've just named it whichever date it is, only to end up with 3 or 4 backed up registries from the same day, and all the same file size. lol
