*#*#@#*!!!!! Picture file too big. Please help the ignorant
    #4314872 - 06/19/05 09:14 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

When I go to upload a picture it always tells me the file is to large and needs to be less 200 kb. I don't know a bit from a byte. How do I reduce the size of the picture. Is there some way to make the same picture take up less space. I have loooked in the posts and the search functions but this procedure is obviously so damn simple that a seven year old can do it. Well I am considerably older than seven and remember Texas Instruments Home Computers, and I am very frustrated at this moment. Thank You

You'll need a copy of some image editing software (Paintshop, Photoshop, etc.) to resize or compress the image until it fits the 200kb limit.

Depending on your operating system, a rudimentary program of this type may be included. Try this if you're on a Windows platform:

Click the Start button (lower left)

Select Run

Type in "mspaint" without the quotes. If that doesn't work try just "paint".

If a program comes up, fumple through the pull down menues until you figure out how to save the file as a compressed .JPG

Good luck.

Edit: PS, if you're really clueless let me know; you can email me the file and I'll shrink it for ya.  :sun:

I found the program and I am looking at the picture in the mspaint. I am looking through all the pull the pull downs, and the only thing remotely promising is SAVE AS. The options I get are monochrome. 16 bit 24 dadadadad gif jpeg, tif, png. Now what? I want to learn how to do this please

Try saving as a .JPG file. That program is very simple and as I recall doesn't offer a choice of compression ratio. See if the saved files is smaller than 200k. If not, try cropping and/or resizing, then saving again.

Don't forget to make a backup copy of the original before you go off changing your only copy!

If none of this works, you'll need to steal, borrow, or buy a copy of a more complete program like PaintShop that can compress the image better than MSPaint does.
