How many spores must germinate to create a mushroom?
    #4313533 - 06/19/05 01:04 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I've always assumed, and been told, that it only takes a single spore to germinate. Then, today, I read this:

"The mycelium that results from a single spore cannot create a mushroom. It takes two compatible hyphae growing from two compatible spores to do that. In this sense it is like the male and the female genders of most plants and animals."

http://mwrop.org/W_Needham/The%20Mushroom%20Chronicles.doc

Is this true?

But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

I will not be able to put it any better than Paul Stamets already has, so here is from The Mushroom Cultivator:

Quote:

The life cycle first starts with a spore which produces a primary mycelium. When the mycelium originating from two spores mates, a secondary mycelium is produced.

(...)

Most mushrooms produce spores that are uninucleate and genetically haploid (1N). This means each spore contains one nucleus and has half the complement of chromosomes for the species. Thus spores have a "sex" in that each has to mate with mycelia from another spore type to be fertile for producing offspring.

(...)

The germ pore, a circular depression at one end of the spore, is the site of germination from which a haploid strand of mycelium called a hypha emanates. This hypha continues to grow, branches and becomes a mycelial network. When two sexually complementary hyphal networks intercept one another and make contact, cell walls separating the two hyphal systems dissolve and cytoplasmic and genetic materials are exchanged. Erotic or not, this is "mushroom sex". Henceforth, all resulting mycelium is binucleate and dikaryotic. This means that each cell has two nuclei and a full complement of chromosomes. With few exceptions, only mated (dikaryotic) mycelia is fertile and capable of producing fruitbodies.

Yes, it's kinda like the male and the female genders of most plants and animals. But taken to the extreme. For example Schizophyllum commune has like 28,000 different "sexes"...

Yeah that document also mentioned that there were tens of thousands of possible combinations between spores.

so the answer is 2

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

As a curiosity, Pholiota nameko is one of the exceptions that can form fruitbodies from homokaryotic mycelium.

Actually there are a large number of mushroom species, perhaps a hundred or so, that are capable of generating mushrooms from single spores. This number will rise as more research is done.

There are many different genetic mechanisms enabling monosporous mycelial fertility: true asexuality, directed amphithallism, etc.

Some authors suggest that the *majority* of species produce secondarily asexual spores at low frequencies.

However the psychoactive Psilocybe lineage seems to be rigidly heterothallic and tetrapolar. It wants to get sex.
