Mycelium madness
    #4313387 - 06/19/05 09:38 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I am a first time grower and I birthed my Golden Teacher cakes into my poor man's pod  web page 4 days ago.  So far there have been a few pins in relatively isolated patches on some of the cakes.  I'm concerned about the mycelium however.  It has poofed out making each cake look extremely fuzzy, and some cakes aren't pinning at all but just all mycelium.  What is causing that and what should I do?
Any help is appreciated  thanks

Are your temps too high? My cakes used to also puff out with alot of mycelia, i never had a problem. Usually, a huge lump of mycelia that grows off the side will support a few large mushrooms.. Next time, give casing a try, it kind of eliminates much of that problem. You may get a large puff of mycelia on a casing, but it doesnt show up till after pins are getting big (well at least for me)

you need to be patient, the myc will do that before pinning sets in sometimes. the ones that are pinning already are pretty damn quick. just give it some time.

Your humidity is likely too high. PMPs are notorious for keeping a constant 100% Rh. This is really not ideal. Mushrooms need about 85-90% humidity for optimal fruiting. You need to reduce the humidity via poly-fill or side holes or something. Your mycelium is using up all the nutrients in the substrate to develop more mycelium. Also, did you dunk/coldshock? That may be an option if you dont have many pins. Simply completely submerse the cakes in fresh natural spring water in some sort of container in the microwave. Keep in there for about 24 hrs. Then take them out and put them back in the PMP. The temperature extremes will be enough to initiate pinning. Hope this helps.

lets see: what is your rh at? don't think that is the prob. 4 days is not that long to wait for pins. if you have your pmp set up according to the tek you should be ok. just wait for a while longer and see what happens. after say 8-9 days then you need to seek out some solutions.
peace

After the 2nd day of the mycelium poofing out I drilled two 2/3 inch holes at the top of my pmp.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, I guess I'm just jumping the gun a little.  I'll give it a little patience and fill ya in
