Workaholic?
    #4232586 - 05/29/05 05:47 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

What would consider one to be a workaholic?

I work almost 70 hours a week.
I'm on call 24 hours a day.
I'm at work when I don't have to.(Due to me having no life outside of work)
I love my job as well as the people.I'm probably underpaid.
Everyone I know says that I work too much, though I don't think I do.
So what makes someone a workaholic? Also...is being one bad?

Maybe you've mentioned before but I've forgotten...

What do you do for a living?

And if you love your job, then that's wonderful.  I know many people who wish they could devote themselves to a job they love.

I think being a 'workaholic' is more then just working a lot at a job you love...like if it starts interferring with your life in a negative way (spending no time with family, etc) then I'd call someone a workaholic.

But if you love and take pride in your job and that's why you work all the time...well, there's nothing wrong with that, in my opinoin.

To me a workaholic is someone who is using work to hide from uncomfortable feelings or problems unaddressed in his/her life.

If you really like your work and the time spent then it is play and something different altogether. :mushroom2:

If you love your job then there is no reason you are a workaholic.

If you're using your job to escape other shit, then you have more to worry about than being a workaholic.

The metric that measures or defines a "workaholic" isn't the actual time, energy or resources put into the workplace or job, but rather the effects of the person's lives outside of that work, as well as one's own mental stability.
One can work alot/hard/etc, but that is different from a workaholic.

Secondly, a workaholic is someone who is psychologically addicted to his or her work. They feel that they can't go for a single day without work.
It's their form of heroin, so to speak.

If you fit that criteria, then it's time to have a pep talk with Buddy Jesus.

Goobler is someone who should be thinking about this more than anybody on this site, I imagine.

Being a workaholic is probably the best addiction you could have since it makes you money instead of the other way around. However, being a workaholic ended up costing my Dad his wife and millions of dollars--money he of course accumulated through his addiction. Just try not to let it get in the way of your family responsibilities and such.

delight in the slaughter of humanity.
Those who resort to violence
will never bring peace to the world...

i think you're moving to different things to compensate for your faulty brain chemistry. you had an addiction and you beat it right.. but maybe your brain is naturally needing more or from that or whatever. you maybe compensate or did compensate with looking for relationships and stuff very frequently. and now its working all the time. its only bad though if its hurting you. so if you like it and its benefiting you as well than it's not really so bad i think. that is my take Desiree.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

well..if you are underpaid inspite of working sooo much..don't you think its time to quit this job? If you love your job inspite of being underpaid and working like a machine, I'm sure you'll love your new job too if it pays you better and ofcourse there's every likelihood that it will require you to work like a human being unlike your present job.
Why do you work soo much? for money? and what will you do with all that money if you don't even have a time to spend it?
Come on ..think about it..Money alone can't buy you happiness ..you need some time too for yourself to find happiness and mental peace.
