Pan Sub? probably not?
    #4312239 - 06/19/05 12:14 AM (13 years, 2 days ago)

So I am new to this,
and I suck at it,
but I need some help.
After alot of rain the other week, I picked some of these out of my backyard because I thought they might be Panaeolus subbalteatus. The pictures suck, so bear with me. The cap actually has a lighter ring in the centre but it is hard to see because there is bad lighting. Spore print was either black or very very dark brown. Southern Ontario, well fertilized lawn in a small group of about 4 or 5. Something tells me they are not sub's, but I need to be told by someone. By the way, if anyone is from southern ontario (Barrie/Simcoe County)or anywhere near there, please give me a shout. I was wondering if in the fall there is any chance of finding some liberty caps, or sylvatica's, or if you know of any good places in my area to search. sry for the long post/for wasting ur time.

Not Panaeolus subbalteatus for sure.
The bottom pic with the blackening of the stem is reminiscent of a Galerina, possibly deadly.

the mushroom in the top pic looks as if it might be a subb. I even see some bruising there?

Take a spore print of the top mushroom, if its jet black its a pan subb. Only one isn't going to do anything, you would need nearly 40 or so large specimens to get a good effect.

Thanks guys
The sporeprint of the top one was either black or just really dark brown, it was hard to tell. I collected a bunch off my lawn before i cut it, but its not quite 40 large ones. Hopefully I see more soon. Thanks

Niether of them are subbs. The one on top is a pan foe i believe. The long, thin, white stem is hint. Pan Subbs stems are much different. Keep hunting.

Belemor,
Im from Barrie, which isnt far away. Im thinkin of goin out of town one day and looking, maybe in Orillia or Stroud, theres farms there. I was wondering, if liberty caps are reported in Quebec and New york State, then who's to say there couldnt be any in Ontario? This fall i would hope to look for them. Anyway, PM me if you have any ideas.

Agreed. Pan foens. That stem and shape of the cap are dead give aways.

do you mean that the shape of the caps is too uniform since pan subbs tend to take on a more wavy, irregular shape as they mature?

also most descriptions of foens say "white stem" but most of the ones i find are white near the cap and fade to brown. most of the subbs i find also look like this except sometimes the brown part is more reddish.

i'd really like to get better at distinguishing the two sinc eprinting them all is starting to become quite an annoying inconvenience.

It's hard to describe what I mean about the caps. I've just encountered so many P. foens that I've got this general image burned into my brain of what the caps of Foens look like.
