Subsitution
    #4311915 - 06/18/05 08:01 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I have seen a ton of these threads... so to help every one out who dosnt like to look around to find out what they can subsitiute.

Vermiculite -
-Coco coir
-perlite... i see every one ask about this, yes it would work but definatly not prefered
-Grow Wool
-PeatMoss (i think not 100% about that one)

Brown Rice Flour-
-Dark Rye Flour
-Wheat flour
-white rice (not as good)
-Corn flour

If anyone wants to add to this or correct me Please Do so, i would like as much *correct* information in this thread as possible so people dont have to keep asking

I've never heard of using straight peat moss as a casing.. I don't think it's a great idea.. Remember, verm straight can be used as a casing, I think there would be problems ie. mud, if you tried to use straight peat..

Brown Rice as a whole? the brown rice flour is just brown rice ground up into a flour

yea, as a whole, one person said it had to be ground up and the other said it was actually better to keep it whole.

You can do it either way, but if doing PF because you don't have a PC, then you wanna stick to the flour.. I'm pretty sure you'd wanna PC the whole grain.

i have read here where just peat can be used as a casing layer, but it is not the best to use by itself. peat will have a tendancy when it gets too wet to become very dense thus not allowing the myc to climb up through it very easily.
peace
