small mushrooms
    #4311983 - 06/18/05 10:23 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I have two casings of wbs (cased in straight verm) They pinned like mad in 9 days, I mean, they're covered with pins. But, they look stalled or something.
They started to grow and have been like real slow and they're like small and skinny, only about 1" tall.
They look like miniature mushrooms. The veils haven't broken and the tops are not black, they're red with white dots (normal)
Anyone know what might cause this? I've never seen it

your substrate caused it most likely if your going to fruit with grain try rye or a rye/wbs mix

sure the substrate can be a cause, but the environment also plays a key role in their development. rh, temp, air exchange, lighting, etc.

Thought air exchange at 1st but red and white dots. Contams?
Have had both red and white dots but not at the same time. This sounds interesting some pic's would be real nice.

Sounds like you did everything right, except the substrate is lacking. While it has plenty of nutriants, it lacks a high moisture content that it can fuse straight into the production of big mushrooms.

Fruit bodies consist of 90+% moisture.

Nutriants without enough moisture cause small shrooms. Moisture without adiquate nutriants cause small shrooms.

Yeah, that's what I didn't wanna hear
The environment is pretty straight, I got my 10 degree drop to 75 @88 % (which is fine for verm case).

It is OI and what I mean by white dots is those little flakes of skin or scales, indicating they're not aborts.
I have a "single tub" type setup and fan 2 x day probly mist once. Theyre on perlite, so, I got rH.
How about substrate moisture? Is there anything I can do to raise the sub moisture?
I'm thinking that is why I went with verm instead of 60/40. Now I'm afraid to try to moisturize the verm layer.
Hmmm, how does harvesting, and casing sound? 60/40, @ the "near saturation" level. Will that F me up?

Edit: I answered from an external link. So, it looks like moisture 4 sure, I agree. Can I recase it?

Thanks for your replys. :sun:

That's why when I get grains going, I only use them on poo.. Casing BRF, or WBS always seems to suck for me.. I haven't tried rye yet, but poo is working nice, I'm gonna stick to it.

Yep, exactly
I used wbs cased in verm whilst I used some of the grains to G2G, spawn poop, and other 'speriments.
But I got exactly the same thing happening. The myc. is extremely agressive.
In the poop, It's just flyin through it.
And I've got primordial activity just like your friend. Like knots everywhere.
I've been tempted to extract the psilo. before I loose it to contams.
I've not a problem with contams, but if they sit there long enough...
Unless I can find a way to save them.

O, BTW, thanks for directing me MR, I'll start reading up tonight

your problem doesnt lie within the substrate. while poor substrate yeilds weak mushrooms, ive grown large shrooms using Brown rice.

I did a small experiment where i cased 2 BR cakes 1" deep with 1/2" moss/verm casing. I did a second casing with 3 BR cakes 1.25" deep, and a thin layer of vermiculite, as suggested by a poster who was trying to figure a way to dunk casings, and in essence suggested a bulk dunk n' roll.

the results were that my peatmoss casing yeilded large and plentyfull shrooms, the verm casing yeilded tiny shrooms, the majority of them aborts.

so whats the lesson? while the substrate dictates shroom potentcy and casing life, it is the casing layer that determines the size of the mushroom, and the success rate of pins growing into mature shrooms.

so you may think that adding a thick casing layer will yeild bigger and bigger shrooms, that isnt how it works. their is a balanced ratio, and correct me if im wrong, but it the casing depth is 1/4 the substrate depth. too thin, small shrooms, too thick, delayed pinning times.

hope that helps.

You may be onto something there, but also, they should pin fine off of verm.
This is wbs. I'm pretty sure it's too dry.
I soaked it for 10 hrs. but did not simmer.

So, does any think I should recase it?

Personally, I would wait until harvest-time, then spawn it to H-poo..

Yes, I think we have a winner
I was cosidering that, but at the same time, I'm kinda tryin not to go bulk.
I guess I'm in now. I'll keep ya'll posted as to what I do.
MR, I'll be checkin out your GL too
Thanks 'all  :mushroom2:

Yeah, mine are about the same size. For me, that is bulk. What do you fruit in?

10 hour soak? yeah, thats way too dry.

you must understand that soaking is just a slower form of simmering, or that simmering is a quicker form of soaking. neither is superior to eachother. I find that soaking takes too many days for what a few hours of simmering can do. the problem people have with simmering is that the hotter they go, the faster the WBS absorbs water, and the higher the chance they have of fucking it all up, so to alleviate this problem i like to sit them in really hot water, but not simmering.

your almost right in his case it is the sub!!! not the casing material or the depth of it if you want to case some grain case rye ,wbs is only good for a spawn, like the man agar said wbs lacks what mushrooms thrive on and that is moisture content ,for i did the same thing to experament with!!!!for it didnt work but wbs is my choice for spawn as it has many many inculation points!!!!yousuck your answers i dont like, you answer things that you know nothing of,so retain yourself as you mean well but not very good advise from someone with under 200 posts!!!and i dont like your dameanner!!!!!!!!keep reading and you have no chioce but to get some what better!!peace
