How Many People Love Malt and Dextrose LC's but

hate straining that stuff through those coffee filter's? PC'ing twice. The mess that goes with straining through those filter's, Takes forever to strain. Well, I decided if I was using doubled up coffee filter's, why not just use the coffee maker. Before I did this I asked my Hubby if he might like a new coffee maker for Father's Day, I'm so considerate, lol.
So I put 3 quarts of warm distilled water in a gallon jug, 3 tablespoons each of Malt and Dextrose, shook it up and made some coffee. Ran a pot of just water first, and after.
30 minutes later I had 5 quarts 3/4 full and in the PC. No mess, no fuss, no PC'ing twice. Seems to have worked pretty good.
This is what the filters looked like when finished,

Just thought I'd share as that mess and hassle was starting to get to me,lol.
If you're afraid of messing up your coffee maker, pick up a $3 one at Goodwill and give it a try.

Have you tried using vacuum filtration? I bet it would make the filtering process alot faster..

I just dont filter them, and the mycelium usually completely covers the sediment, and thrive from it...

How do you get sediment chunks into your syringe?

I just took these out a few hours ago. They are the cleanest one's I've had yet, don't know if you can tell from the pic's,

and it was so easy. Thought it was 5, but had 6 jars done and out of the PC in like 45 minutes.

Well, I do LC in Quart jars or bigger... so even if I got a quarter inch of sediment (I have never gotten more than one cm or so) that leaves enough liquid to make a huge amount of syringes. Other than that.. your going use a magnetic stirrer or a piece of broken glass to separate the mycelium anyways (I hope) which will break up the sediment simultaneously. I mean, how do you suck chunks of mycelium in your syringe?

If you have the patiance, you don't even need to filter it. Just mix about 20% more than you intend to use, PC & allow it to settle for about 2 days, then carefully pour off the top 80% of the solution into your LC containers & PC again. Ya, I know that's PC'ing it twice. But - for sure - it's sterile.

Up late,lol.
Do you think that 25 minutes at 15psi won't get it sterile? If I'm only going to PC once should I go longer?

might not even need to be PCed at all, being a liquid culture the simple boiling in the coffee maker could be sufficient. try not PCing a couple of jars and see if they get contamined!

20 / 25 minutes in a PC @ 15 psi does the job.

I have never used this method but I can vouch for karo being easy as fuck(I tried straw water, millet water, and honey water before karo...none of them worked for me)
heres the karo I use(2tbsp of karo/100ml water) plus a pic of liquid azure AO to show its ability...I have no reason to try anything else at this point

I only STEAM for 5-10 min(and lean towards 5) the less yellow it is the better(less carmalization) at least when it comes to karo

^ I got a pretty good laugh out of that too. But as far as vacuum filtration goes, you dont wanna spend a few hundred on a vacuum pump and setup, then buy the glassware necessary to perform a vacuum filtration (filter flask, filter funnel, papers, hose, etc)? Lol, i guess if you have your own lab setup its just kind of convienent.. im gonna do up a few malt/dextrose jars today

Nice filtering method HippieChick, but...
Consider if you will... (In my best Rod Serling voice)
Rather than pre-mixing your malt, dextrose, etc. and then running it through the coffee maker, just put all of the ingredients into the filter basket, just like you would coffee. That way, your only putting distilled water through the coffee maker. You could start with a Gallon/4litre Jug of distilled water. Fill your coffee maker from this jug. Use 160g (4%) or 120g (3%)of ingredient mix, malt, dextrose, honey, Karo, etc. etc in the filter basket, do a coffee run, then pour the "coffee" back into your Gallon/4Litre Jug of distilled water. One gallon of LC ready to be put into jars and PC'd
