Panaeolus subbalteatus on my lawn?
    #4311281 - 06/18/05 04:06 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

hi everyone, i have just found what i believe to be Panaeolus subbalteatus growing on my grassy lawn. are there any poisonous look alikes to this species? i am posting a few pictures i took after bringing some up to my house. i live in western vermont, about a mile from the connecticut river. it has been raining for several days with very few breaks, so the ground here is very moist. i noticed these a few hours after the rain ended, and they definately cought my eye. tell em what you think based on these pictures, and if you need more details i would be happy to describe it more. thanks alot.

they look like panaeolina foenisecii.

take a spore print, if its jet black, they are subbs, if its brown at all, its pan foes.

They dont look like Panaeolina or Panaeolus subbalteatus.
Probably an inactive species of Panaeolus.
Maybe Pan. papilionaceus, but the caps appear [too] dark brown in the pics.

    #4311652 - 06/18/05 06:33 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

if they turn out to be Panaeolus subbalteatus, which i think they may be after taking a spore print, how much should i eat dried or fresh? i normally take a dried 8th of cubensis, so how does Panaeolus subbalteatus potency compare? thanks alot

they actually are black, that picture isnt very accurate. it looks like black ink. if i eat them, and take the risk that they are panaeolina foenisecii, what is the worst that could happen? are any of the lookalikes poisonous? if panaeolina foenisecii isnt poisonous i will try eating some because i would hate to see all those hundreds of caps in my yard die if they are active. how much should i try?

well if your sure they are black (they arent black in those photos), then they are probably pan subbs, although the stem doesn't appear to be a subbs either. If they are infact subbs and your looking to feel effects from them, I would say 30-50 large specimens for a good experience.

Those arent Panaeolus subbalteatus judging from the pics. A black spore print only proves that they are Panaeolus (and the spore print is very cleary brown in the photos).

That spore print is as brown as it'll get. You should print every specimen you have because you'll probably get some more black ones. Once you see a black one compared to a brown one you'll always be able to tell. (don't yell at me if your camera/scanner has actually created an inaccurate image but try looking at it under white light.)
