Vermiculite Substitute
    #4311649 - 06/18/05 08:32 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I've searched for this, but it seems that most people here looking to use pumice intend to substitue it for the perlite. I'm able to purchase perlite, but no store ive been to carries vermiculite because of the health hazards. A garden supply store recommended i use pumice instead of the vermiculite as they are basically the same thing, but there's no mention of pumice anywhere here.

Anyone know of any complications i might run into using pumice in place of verm? or any reason why this might not work out? thanks

there are tons of posts about this. perlite/pumice wick moisture where as vermiculite sbsorbs, holds and releases moisture.

Best to order some online, if you cannot find it localy.

Did you try the phone book - under insulation.

BTW, it has NO HEALTH HAZARDS - unless you eat a bag of it, or breath in a pound or 2 of it's dust, or someone dumps 5 tons on you & you smother. The same holds true for plain dirt - any health hazard - would be about the same.

Yeah, there is no substitute for verm. That stuff is great.
Problem I'm seein, is my town no longer carries that coarse stuff.
Is that it agar? I'm out right now. I gave the last of the good stuff away
