LEE COUNTY? Wild mushrooms are sprouting up across Southwest Florida because of our moisture and heat. Some are harmless, but others can be dangerous, even psychedelic.
Crimini, white and portabella are all mushrooms you can safely eat.
Those found in parking lots and within animal waste, you better not. In fact, authorities in DeSoto County say these mushrooms can be hallucinogenic.
"They're common around cow dung and grain fed animals," said Harry Evers of the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office.
Evers says because the mushrooms are popping up across the area, people who are looking to get high are trespassing on private property to get them.
"They would have maps to this area on how to get here and some of their comments were that they could take them up north, like North Carolina and sell them and get more for them than marijuana," said Evers.
Because mushrooms lack chlorophyll, they grow by breaking down dead animal and plant matter for nourishment. Because the mushrooms grow in cow dung, you can imagine the toxins within the fungi.
Because the mushrooms get users high, it is illegal to take them ? and can be deadly if you eat too many.
DeSoto County authorities say possession of psychedelic mushrooms is a second degree felony, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and-or up to a $10,000 fine.

For cryin out loud. This is absolute bull shit. We might as well arrest the farmers for having the cows that produce these mushrooms. They are the "drugs" manufacturer. GO FOR THE SOURCE BOYS!
