The Mars Volta(video)

I was recently introduced to these guys and they are amazing. So I decided to play them for my sister who is almost strictly Rap and R&B....she fell in love with them. I love introducing new kinds of music to people. Makes me smile.
I highly recommend that if you haven't heard of these guys then what the hell are you waiting for?!
Get their music...listen to it...it's good stuff!
I posted thier newest video...gotta watch it.

you need to see them live sometime.
They jam. They're loud. The drummer gives me chills. The only band I enjoyed more in concert was tool.
When I saw the mars volta they opened for A Perfect Circle. Great show, but I think the opening act gave the better performance that night.

they supposedly suck ass live, because they're too busy with stage antics to play the damn songs well. at least omar and cedric are.
but hey, the albums are excellent and very trip worthy. very unique music too, i love them.

this is bullshit. The do some cool stuff on stage, but it does not take away from the songs. The reason they get a bad rep live is because they go on some extended jams which get really hectic and insane. some people don't dig it, but some people are just squares. I loved the jams. I dunno. I only saw them once, but they were so fucking good I about creamed. They made APC seem stale, so that has to say something about what they can do on the stage. I loved thier show. I'd pay twice as much as I did for that bill just to see them again, by themselves.

one of the most amazing bands of our generation IMO. not many bands exist that move me like these guys do, and i love a lot of music.
also the most amazing live show i have ever seen. some people get 'stage antics' mixed up with endulgent jamming and feeling the moment. ignore the haters, these guys are the real deal!!

someones momma didn't hold them enough.
I loved, and still love, at the drive-in, but I'm not so quick to compare the two bands simply because they shared members. I don't see the music as being very simillar between the two. And lets not forget the other at the drive-in spin off band, Sparta, which kinda blows, but I will admit that for an emo band, they are about as good as you can get.

i was an ATDI fan before the mars volta were around, and i seem to be the only veteran that can 'admit' the mars volta are the supreme band :P ATDI are absolutely unreal though, nothing against them, but the mars volta is where they show their true colours.

I seen them live when they opened for APC. I wasn't impressed at all. The lead singer had the mic stand in his teeth and was dancing around like some african tribal dance lol.
They seemed like they wannabe zeplin to me. And there were no breaks in their songs, it was like one giant monotonous balad that never ends! Ok I was prolly a bit harsh, might be better if I heard the studio version but live I didn't like it.
Sometimes I think Maynard picks bands that totally suck so you truely are impressed when he comes out

You guys like the mars volta are the only talented musicians making good music that's not "mainstream".
I used to be into them back in 2002, but now...I can listen to a few songs, 4 tops without getting bored.
I'm so glad I didnt pay 150 bucks to see them live.

I also thought that Mars Volta was the best show I saw at Bonnaroo. Which is weird cuz I was pretty set on seeing Galactic that night, but at the last minute our new friend Sweet Melissa convinced us to go. And it freakin' blew me away. Even though I had heard good things, I was unprepared for the awesomeness of The Mars Volta. Good times, great music. Yeah!

I thought just the opposite. They were great in concert but thier music style is hard to translate onto CD. It is like a dead show in that it flows from song to song with impromptu interlaced. I liked them before seeing them live and after the show I was totally loving them.

I'd love some clarification on why I am wrong. I just listened to the Sonic Youth album, Confusion is Sex, followed by their albums in order up to Daydream Nation. Then Murray Street and Goo. Then my Mars Volta album. Strikingly different...

The Mars Volta has a uniqueness all of thier own. It's hard to put them in any catagory or even compare them to anybody. Some people like them some don't...to each their own.
Don't hate those who disagree. Just respect others' opinions. This is not directed towards anyone in particular.

Those statements are so opposite of reality that i think you have to be joking...but your not. hmm
1. artistic talent? I think they have plenty. Their music is some of the most unique anti-pop type of music out there. It's a completely fresh sound that they created by fusing lots of different music together.
2. Music Theory - i'm starting to think you've never even heard TMV before. They go through more time signature changes in one song than sonic youth goes through in a whole album. TMV flows effortlessly through signatures that are extremely complex.
3. Their musicianship is awesome imo. He's not the most technical guitarist on the planet but he's very creative and it's actually his sloppy abrasive style that i like so much. He can improvise, play in strange signature, solo well, and come up with bizarre chord progressions. Flea played on the first album, yeah he blows
I think comparing them to sonic youth is ridiculous. sonic youth was unique and ground breaking because there was nothing like them at the time (much like TMV) but to suggest that they were these master musicians is laughable. Brilliant theory? how is three power chords and some feedback noises brilliant theory? Personally i think Volta blows them out of the water.

Ares love Volta.
-------------------- A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. I like how you don't even give the name of The Mars Volta album but yet you list what, three Sonic albums? It clearly shows you have a terribly biased opinion and it matter not what anyone says or how you listen to TMV, you will not like them because you have something against them. I laugh when I see people block themselves mentally like this.
Good job with the closed and already made up mind.

""Inertiatic ESP", Comatorium's first real song, stands out as the only memorable track, probably due to its succinct, 4?-minute runtime. Afterward, every song follows a pattern: roar out of the gate with the main riff, stop suddenly, float in reverby space where one can hear the smoke machines and laser shows, bring back the opening riff with added guitars noodling away, slurp up the noise in a sucking sound, hit the pachanga 'n' guitar solo movement, slowly fade in a swarm of dub effects, and, BAM, repeat step one. Think of a San Diego hardcore band. Think of ALL of the San Diego hardcore bands at once whipping through ELP's "Karn Evil 9" without practice."-Pitchfork Media They just strike me as a band who wants so desperately to be taken seriously as artistic. I do apologize for not listing the name of the album, but it is of course De-Loused in the Comatorium. After relistining to this album to try and see what the big deal is, I can say that the bass lines are somewhat interesting. As a new bass owner I can appreciate that, not as complex as you maybe are making it out to be, but still interesting. As far as time signatures, frankly I dont know what you mean. Some songs have parts that arent in 4/4 I would agree, but if you have ever played music I am sure you know this is not something particularly striking. It is not as if they have the gusto of the Allman brothers to each be playing in a different rhythm and then link up at points and drop out. I think it is also clear that we both have biases, claiming that Sonic Youth is merely three chords with distortion is as silly to me as my arguments are to you. Relisten to Daydream Nation, and their instrumental parts, if you dont immediately notice similarities then I frankly dont know what else to say. Listen to Murray Street, their sort of free jazzish album, and listen to their instrumentals. Take away all of the studio tricks from the mars volta and I would have to agree with pitchfork media, fairly average band. For someone to claim to me that this band sounds like nothing else, just sort of annoys me on several levels. One level is that it just ignores all of the people that came before who were more inventive and pushed limits so that the average 'indie' listener would be able to listen to watered down versions many years later. Listen to Captain Beefhearts album Trout Mask Replica, do you love that? I personally find it quite ahead of its time. Listen to Sister Ray, do you love that anywhere near as much? On a tangent, I was recently debating with a friend the relevency of Bjork. I find much of her stuff to be directly related to Milton Babbit, and composers around his time. And when I played some stuff by these composers to my friend, he claimed it was vastly different. Whatever. My main problem with this band is they have no soul or meaning to their incesent instrumental ramblings. John Coltranes album Ascension is one of the wildest albums I know of, but it is wild in a very real and emotionally scary and enlightening way. This Mars Volta album does nothing for me. Sure Maybe some instrumental parts are interesting, but where is the depth. If it does it for you, hey cool, personally I find it to be just one more brick in the wall.

Why do you say ignore it? I see where you're coming from.
It's just that most of the time when I listen to the Mars Volta I find myself compelled to stand up and dance and sing like it's the day I'm gonna die. They get you, they hook you in. It's psychological.

yea.. the floor tickets sold out the day they went on sale over here. but i got the next best thing... the front row of the first balcony, right in front of a sea of people.
i cant believe i missed them touring with APC... and in a venue that only holds 1,000!
oh well... thisll make up for it. im gonna bring some cannabrownies. its gonna be mind blowing... but i cant say im excited to see the opening band, bad acid trip. if im on acid, they might actually induce one
thanks for the link to the video. ive been looking all over for a high quality version of it. its lame as hell that they cut the song short for promotional purposes.

like so much else in life, so many people seem to forget that art and music is about CREATIVITY, VISION, PUSHING BOUNDARIES ... not about contests of 'who's better', and certainly not about making music just to please people ...
for those who have read interviews with cedric and omar, you'll know the mars volta are making a serious statement about the fact that music should be without label, since labelling is just for those who don't really care to know what is inside a book, just what the cover looks like
and i'm fucking sick and tired of so many people who feel that their opinion of music is higher than other people, that they know 'better' what sounds 'better', when it's ALL just a matter of preference ...
on subject, though, i have LOVED mars volta since the night they came out, when my friend made a point of running out and getting tremulant ... and THEN i got into ATDI ... and i respect both bands so much for what they are, but as far as something that digs deep, the mars volta are number 1 for me
are they the BEST BAND EVER? no .. there is no best band ever .. only YOUR FAVORITE band ever ... are they good technical musicians? well, what's your PREFERENCE of style of playing? sloppy or constrained? planned or spontaneous?
i mean, how can you people possibly objectify things that are completely subjective by nature? it's completely absurd ...

After getting back into the volta after the release of amputechture, I made a 6 hour drive to Ventura to see them play at the Ventura theatre. A small venue with JUST them.
God it was amazing. Cedric was sick so at the last minute, they changed the set list....but he sounded amazing. I'd love to hear him when he's NOT sick!
God I love these guys.

Hell yes. I saw them at the Aragon in Chicago, this beautiful Spanish-villa-looking theater. It was just them and they blew my fucking brains out.
I'd say hands down some of the most creative artists we have right now in America. The best live show I've ever seen, tickets were $40. I will pay whatever the price to see them again and again.
Listening to their albums, to me, is like watching a movie. It's something I CAN put on and do other things and just dance around to (did I mention they groove hard as fuck?), but it's equally (perhaps more) enjoyable to sit down and just listen to the whole album.
Get some quality bud and some quality headphones and Frances the Mute will dropkick your ass. Their energy I find to be quite contagious.
The salsa breakdown man. what the fuck.

This thread is old as shit.
I saw them live when they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and it really turned me off to them. I used to like them (specifically De-Loused, I'm not too fond of their other albums) but the live show was pretty terrible in my opinion. I still listen to De-Loused sometimes, but not as much as I used to.

Without Jon Theodore, I seriously doubt the Volta's ability to seriously kick as much ass as they once did.
I hope they prove me wrong. Just watch the video of Cygnus that TrippinNinjaBuddha posted with whoever that other clown is on drums. Pretty sad if you ask me. Sure, he's pretty groovy, but the raw power and unshakable feel of Theodore is just not there.

they said he was lazy, but who knows. it was all downhill after de loused anyway, when jeremy ward died they lost the magic, they also gave up drugs apparently after de loused and it seems pretty obvious... we'll see what their next album has to offer.

Yeah, Deloused was awesome, hard to top. But Amputechture is their most ambitious and impressive. Maybe you just didn't give it enough listens. There's some dense shit on that album. Listen to Tetragrammaton or Meccamputechture or Day of the Baphomets a few more times and tell me it doesn't blow your fucking socks off.
And who said Theodore was lazy? If you ask me Jon Theodore is the Mars Volta, just as much as Cedric and Omar. I wouldn't be surprised if Theodore got fed up with them doing shit like writing in the liner notes of Amputechture, "The Mars VOlta is Omar Rodriguez Lopez and Cedric Blixler Zavala. The band that plays the music on this album is Omar blahblah, Cedricblahbla, Jon Theodore, etc" What kind of shit is that anyway? Ok, we get it, Omar and Cedric spawned the band, but you don't have have to trumpet this fact in a way that, if you ask me, is insulting to the rest of the group.
If they did anything to alienate Theodore, they blew it.

from what i read they stated he wasn't showing up for practices, though i'll have to go find the source, i believe it is also on tmv forum.
i'm not saying their new music is terrible, but i have yet to see any tmv that surpasses the lowlands 2003 show, none that i can connect with like that. of course everyone will have their own opinion on them though.
i feel the same way about system of a down, their first album was amazing, after that it just wasn't same, again, IMO. i guess everyone has their own musical preferences though.

I concur with the the statements about both System of a Down and The Mars Volta.
