Underwater active Mushrooms?
    #4309314 - 06/17/05 11:49 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I didn't know this until the other day, but I learned that there are underwater mushrooms. Do any of you think there are any species that could be active? Obviously there is less known about these guys, and I'm sure there are many unidentified. Just curious....

. They are not "Mushrooms", but microscopic predatory fungi. Certainly inactive.

These are the only kind of marine fungi i can think of. if you have some kind of resource or pictures, id love to see.

There are at least 11 known species of marine Basidiomycetes. I have no idea if any of them contain any psychoactive substances nor if any of them have ever been bioassayed.

You are correct Shroomie of Doomie, psilocybin is water souluble. Thats why "mushroom tea" works so well.

As far as underwater "mushrooms" are concerned... Underwater ecology/biology is a hobby of mine, I guess you could say. I've kept fish for 8 years and worked at a Fish store for 6. I know more about "underwater biology" than most people would ever care to learn. Underwater fungi are just that: fungi. There are no "mushrooms" or fruit bodies that I am aware of. Typically underwater fungi are the decomposers when bacteria is not available. You will frequently see fungi decompsing dead fish in very acidic conditions where there is not much oxygen avaliable. You know fish are being decompsed by fungi when they take on a "cottony" or "fuzzy" appearance.

As far as the fungi underwater being active... Perhaps there is some other chemical that might be non-water soluable that might be psychoactive... But you couldn't pay me enough to eat a decomposing fish covered in fungus. Christ, the smell is enough to make most people vomit  :smirk:

interesting links ivi. It is kind of freaky to think terrestrial mushrooms evolutionized from water. But what is even freakier, we as humans are said to have evolutionized from water as well.

Marine Biology is a rather new frontier. discoveries being made daily. perhaps the next breakthrough in medicine is just a couple feet below the surface of our waters.
