Postal Tyvek Vs. Polyfill: MUCH FASTER with right technique
    #4308753 - 06/17/05 09:19 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

My buddy has a double batch of jars that he cooked. He used his typical perfect rye formula (280ml water 250g rye weighed on a digi) and PC'ed as normal. Knocked them up with Koh Samui Super Strain multispore, The only difference was 3 jars were covered with a metal lid with a 1/4" hole in it (look at how magash does his jars) and the other 4 used polyfill lid filters. Tyvek jars are beating the other jars by about 50%, on almost every single jar. Is this common? I would think that the results should be the same... I know there is nothing wrong with the polyfill jars, they are colonizing and don't smell like they're bacterially contammed. Anyone else have this experience? The tyvek jars will probably be done in about 10 days, the polyfill at their current rate of growth will take about 14. I should post some pics later... just an interesting case study in air exchange.

it would make sense that growth/air exchange is better for just tyvec. 1 ply of HDPE fibers less than 100 microns thick vs. a random network of fibers that is probably several centimeters thick, even though only constrained at the lid. I've used both a lot lately and there are definitely differences. Has anyone noticed that stacking jars matters? The top layer will pull ahead after several days left unattended.

it could be because the tyvek give more air exchange but that = moisture loss. Tyvek can pull contams in if grain goo gets stuck to is,

Any filter material that is saturated by steam that contains nutriants (juice from seed/grains)during PC'ing is very capable of wicking contaminates into a seed/grain jar culture.

in lc polyfill can pull contam in, gain no or not a good chance of it. Polyfill is usally 1/2 to 1 inch thick from inside the jar to outside. Tyvek is like 1/10th mm. So if there is nutes touching the tyvekm the nutes will soak through and contam on the outside of the jar then the contams will travel through the tyvek.

I just had a bunch of cakes with a tyvek lid and the mycelium grew through the tyvek. Sort of cool. Had a verm layer so the butes werent touching and it wasnt a problem. I will take pics next time

It's grown too long so I can pick it up by the lid. planning on wedging it up this weekend.

Your correct. Contams will grow on tyvek, actually I usually use tyvek envelopes, which are 25% post consumer paper, and as we all know paper is a possible substrate for certain strains of mushrooms, which means it has nutes and thus contams. I recently lost about 15 jars to this effect, but when you use the tyvek with a lid and a small hole (1/4" or so) it seems to be less of a problem. In any event, i'll keep you guys posted about actual colonization times. I need to get my digi cam on some of these jars, its such a clear difference between polyfill and tyvek when you actually see it for yourself.

I am still confused about this tyvek & post comsume paper thing.

If it has paper in it, it isn't tyvek.

The way I read the data, the post consumer recycled stuff is used tyvek, or polyster, melted & spunbonded into new tyvek.

can anyone provide a link, that verifies there is PAPER in any tyvek.

I've worked with paper and fibers, post consumer tyvek might be recycled paper fibers added as a filler to the HDPE fibers in tyvek. just a guess though, I used to be invovled with research for the USPS

no mention of it being recycled paper or not. just 25% post consumer recycled material.

probably recycled HDPE then, from plastic bottles I suppose

yeah, I was stoned and made a stupid post. of course they wouldn't add paper. I think recycled paper is more expensive than recycled HDPE and contaminating their HDPE with low quality recycled paper wouldn't be smart. It's full of all sorts of random chemicals/particles.

Why not just stick to coffee filters? They work great.

Coffee filters work great as a dust cover OVER a PRIMARY filter.

Coffee filters - alone are not GREAT.

#5 is after PC'ing

Hi agar, haven't seen you around for a while. How have ya been?
Anywho, I use two layers of coffee filters and have not had any problems so far, the gas exchange is awsome and nothing gets in or comes out. I am yet to tryout Tyvek, a kind shroomery member is shipping me some.
