Damn these Rye Jars!
    #4308500 - 06/17/05 08:09 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Ok I made about 14 rye jars, noc'ed em up with some REALLY healthy rhyzomorphic agar wedges and everything seemed good, withing 2 days a few jars were colonizing fast, real fast. but then it all came to a halt. Its been over a week with no growth whatsoever. what am i doing wrong? I'm not some newbie that doesn't read the archives either. I've done my research and don't know why it's doing that. the only thing I did different it not use tyvek, didn't have any so i just did it anyways. any help would be nice. thanks ya'll

Your jars probably ran out of moisture, or they have too much (pooling). Do you have experience with rye jars? Did you shake after the PC cycle to mix dry + wet grain together?

I did the same thing, a whole bunch of rye jars with agar. I've gotten some real fast growth too, but I'm newer and don't know if it's good growth or bad growth. Without tyvec, do you have polyfill in the lids? Or open or closed completely? Lack of air exchange can definitely cause the growth to stall.

One reason for halted growth of incubating mycelium is bacterial contamination. A big variable to take into account for (which really shouldn't be a variable @ all) is water content. Excess can lead to standing water. And we all know standing water produces contam's. So this might be the case.

I can see you say you have done your reading. So then I am right to assume you are soaking/simmering your rye berry and straining to the correct water content? Can you post pics of the jars?

It has been this dead ducks experience that poor water content in substrate or casing layer can lead to a halt of mycelium growth. Most likely due to bacterial contaminants. My 2 cents.

no tyvek or polyfill, i keep the jars kinda loose with the lid upside-down. and yeah right when they were done pc'ing I shook the hell out of them while they were hot. 1 of the jars is more then 50% colonized, and just stopped.. =O( makes me sad, i spent a pretty penny for all the stuff to grow them to, i just don't wanna see it go down the drain.

it's probably air exchange then, you should be able to identify contaminates. upside-down lids aren't going to pass much air, even if they are loose.

um, probably late... you'd have to open them up again. If you have lids with holes already, you might be able to make a fast change without opening them up for long. Otherwise, punching holes in your lids and adding a square of tyvek will be tricky.

couldn't i cut a circle of tyvek and quickly switch the lid with the tyvek circle?

probably, a lot of people have used just the metal ring without the lid... Some might say that is to much air exchange causing a dry jar.

wouldn't try that, well maybe in a glove box, but pc the tyvek and some fresh lids first.

did you try shaking them again?
sometimes if there is really dense mycelium at the top of the grain it can prevent air exchange lower down. if that is the case mix it up and it should start growing again.

the other thing that first occurred to me is wet spot, seems to be a problem w/ rye

Using the ring, without a lid & tyvek as a filter USUALY causes wbs/rye jars to dry out & stall. Simply because a great deal of moisture can escape through such a large area of tyvek filter material.

In experiments, with the exact same batch, with a lid, with a 1/4 inch hole in the lid & a tyvek filter underneath colonizes perfectly.
