    #4308135 - 06/17/05 05:44 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

i'm getting ready to case my hawaains and they have been fully colinated on the outside for about a week now which is a little more than i was told to do. My question is sh ould i cold shock them or dunk them or anything first, and also what has everyone found to be the best depth for your substrate and how big of a casing layer.

Dunk them in cold water and you can put them in the fridge to do dunk/cold shock at the same time.

I am trying a casing with 10 haf-pint PF jars right now. It is pinning really well. Big seems to be the way to go. Casing layer around 1/2".

Cubes don't really need a coldshock. A 10 degree temp. drop is all that is needed to help induce pinning. Incubating at aroud 84 degrees and fruiting at around 74 will do the trick.

I crumbled mine into pea size pieces.

My substrate's are between 6 and 8 inches. I would say you want at least 2". That's the difference in spawning to poo. Your 2" deep substrate would become a 10" depth just adding a little free poo.

Good Luck.

The cold shocking depends on the strain. Some strains are more stubborn and do not pin as easily. I have never Not cold shocked. I have never had a problem with pinning.. so why mess with what works?

I crumbled the cakes. The main reason being that you want a really flat substrate surface to get the best pinset. But you could try a few cakes whole .. and then crumble the rest around them to make everything nice and flat.

My substrate with the big PF casing is about 3.5"
