Serious business question - I need input

I am throwing around the idea of opening a bar. I am stuck between several "themes".
1. A slightly grimy but cool looking bar that would attract misfits.
2. A fancy bar that would attract more upscale people. I would have really nice wood work and shit like cigars for sale.
3. A down to earth but really nice bar. Everything would look classy, but the atmosphere would be open to everybody.
I have a vague picture of each in my head. Does anybody have any ideas or gimmicks that I could use? Think of a cool bar that you have been to...why was it cool?

Sell pot out of my bar? Um...no thanks. I am in America. That would be a big no-no.

I went to a cool ass irish pub in Florida, had like half a million dollars in 1 dollar bills all over the walls and ceilings, drinks were incredibly large, lots of good humour in there and good traditional irish music.
My local watering hole is pretty grimey, with a tex-mex theme. Graffitti all over the walls and tables. I love it.

Who are you most comfortable dealing with?
What kind of environment are you comfortable in?
Chances are, there are people with your similar tastes.

Seems to me your descriptions are pretty vague.
I think you'd have to ask yourself a couple of questions.
1. Do you want to open a bar so you can party and have fun? or make money? An "upscale" bar would probably make more money, a misfit bar may be more fun.
2. Location? if your in a "misfit" type area they will come.
3. Competition. OPening an "upscale" bar in the middle of a strip of them doesnt make much sense. Are you in an area where you can cater to "upscale" people? Can the people afford it?
Then always you'll have issues of startup costs etc. Essentially determine what YOU want to do, and look at your clients/demographics etc. Just my $0.02

You'd probably make the most money with this idea.

Make it all retro and have a vodka drink with LSD in it. But don't tell people there's LSD in it.
Should be fun.
Seriously though, I'd go with the third option.

Yeah...the more I think of it, the better a "party" bar sounds. In the city that I would be doing this (Pittsburgh) the economy is big enough to support businesses, but money slowly creeps out of the city year after year. Pittsburgh is right in the middle of the "Rust Belt" where populations are shrinking and good jobs are getting scarcer. However, Pittsburgh has several renowned universities (Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and Univ. of Pittsburgh) that keeps the 18-24 crowd fairly well-populated in the area. Maybe I should focus on the young-ins instead of the older professionals (who are moving away).

I wanted both to be honest (have fun and make money).

The area that I was thinking of has both misfit and upscale areas. There are a shitload of bars in this neighborhood and every one of them is packed on the weekends with younger type people. However, a new very upscale shopping center area was constructed near it recently. Around this upscale shopping area are upscale apartments and condos. Lots of Lexus's are parked everywhere. So, this neighborhood has both "misfit" and "upscale" areas within close proximity.

just don't drink in your bar...
restaraunt/bar biz is hard the employees will rob you blind since you deal with a lot of cash
friends will hit you up for freebies..
if its a biz then you're in it for a profit and you have to remember to keep you witts about you..I've many people fail in that biz

I am throwing around the idea of opening a bar.
Not to rain on your parade, but have you thought about the difficulty and expense of getting a liquor license?

I would go with 2 or 3. It is a place of business and therefore you want to make the most $$ possible doing what your doing. 2 or 3 will bring more $$ into the joint. I like the idea of a classy looking place with the atmosphere being open to everybody though so personally Id go with number 3.
