cooking WBS @ 10 psi
    #4307513 - 06/17/05 02:51 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Is it possible to get away with this? The only pressure cooker I have is 10 psi.

At 10 PSI your temps should be around 239.4? F .. 15psi is around 250? F ..

I have not used 10PSI before.. but I would say just increase your time and it should turn out alright. PC for at least 1.5 hours.. if not 2. But get another opinion.. I haven't tried it.

Id do it at least 2 hours, since Ive had problems at 60 minutes every now and then, I do normal WBS at 90 minutes at 15 PSI...just to make sure...so I'd do 2 hours just to make sure with the 10 PSI...2.5 hours if you got the time..60-90 minutes might do ok though...all depends on the seed you got in particular, every bag is different.

i hada 10% and it did cotam a little more because it wasn't very accurate. usually i reccomend 1/3 longer than with 15 psi. i do my wbs for 50 to 60. so 90 min ad you'll be fine. also make sure you soak for at least 24 hours. Then you'll have a better chance of killing most endospores and bacteria and mold and what not becaus eit will germinate.

You can PC, for 8 hours, if it doesnt run dry. One PC I had, let out steam as it PCed...fell asleep with that one and burnt the hell out of the seed...my other PC barly lets any out (not a rocker, release valve) and I fell asleep with it and the grain was fine after 8 hours...a little dark and swollen...but not burnt, and worked fine..there was still water in the PC though.

Eitherway, a PC shouldnt run out of water in 2 hours I dont think...

I guess I'll cook for about 1.5 hours then.

What setting should I cook at on my stove? I had it on medium high before, but it sounds more like its working better on high. My stove is an old GE, so I'm not sure what the temps are.

Its AA style, not AA...it starts spitting out steam at 19PSi, and I can hear it and it stops there. The thing on top spits it out to make sure it doesnt get higher and blow...nothing should blow if you have the release valve though.

The temp you put your stove on depends on the stove, but also the type of PC, size of it, and whats in it.. I think the rocker kind need to be set higher, but mine on HI takes like 7 minutes to get to 15 PSI, and then I put it on WM (lowest setting) and it sits there..sometimes its between WM and LOW, depending on how filled the PC is and how dense (bags, jars, substrate, casing mix, ect). Its an old stove too, heats up pretty well..pretty normal..

The small burner needs to be on like MED I think though for the PC...

I think mine should be good on high. Last time I used my PC on a previous stove and it was wistling because it was so high, and fully loaded with jars. After I opened it up, there was barely any water left.

There should be little or no steam escaping. My cooker had 6 heat levels. The second it got to pressure on 6 I turned it down to 2, then when steam stopped it went to 4. I then varied between 3 and 4 every 20mins. You just have to get to know your own cooker and pc.
