Rubbing Alcohol is SO COOL!

I love rubbing alcohol for sanitizng. My question is, do you guys use the 91% or 70%? I have heard that it is actually the presence of water, not just the alcohol which lyses the bacterial cells, and 70% is easier to obtain so thats what I'm using currently.

I use both, 91% Burns better in the alcahol lamp, and 70% works fine for everything else.

I prefer to use 70%. The slower evaporation time gives you more time to do clean work.

70% is suitable, for alcohol lamps pick up Denatured Alsohol at a hardware/home improvement store

70% is too slow for me...

takes too long to dry.

And what do you guys say about 50% for sterilizing?

There is some 50% available at a local store so I was wondering.

are you guys using this stuff to clean your Rubbermaid's and other stuff.. Or are you burning it to kill anything on say the spore syringe.

Yes it just feels cool because it evaporates faster then sweat and pulls the heat away from your body. Sometimes the dr. will use alcohol to drop your body temp if you are cooking, well at least in the old days. So i guess you can say that alcohol is cool

i don't use either. here is what i use:

works rather well, use it at the lab i work at for sanitizing counters before plating samples for bacterial analysis.
ok so it is a little pricey, but a gallon will last a very long time.

70% is where it's at for sure. Easily obtainable at Wal-Mart for $0.97 and works well for all of your sterilization needs. It does take a little long to dry, so I usually saturate a paper towel and use it to wipe down what I need. It seems to dry quicker than direct spraying in my opinion.

i cut it 50/50 w/ h2o. 35% works fine. :thumbup:

Uh, actually that effect has nothing to do with the temperature of alcohol. Just because it feels cooling doesn't mean that it's, itself, a low temperature.

I prefer to get the 50% or the 70% for wiping things down cause it's slower to evaporate. AND use the 91% for syringes since it will evaporate quicker cause I aint waitin.

I make my own alcohol and you divide what you distill up, you dont drink the start of the distillation as it contains horrible tasting stuff, but it is perfect for sanatising and is 95%. I have gallons of the stuff.
