First try at growing at home and having some problems
    #4305697 - 06/16/05 11:19 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Ok so this is my first time trying to grow shrooms. We used the PF tek with jars and everything was going ok. We inoculated 4 strains each 12ccs in 40 1/2 pint jars on May 19th. My question is we have seen mycelium growth in 3 of the 4 strains. One strain didn't grow in any of the jars. The other three strains have over half the vermiculite covered but have seemed to stop growing...almost like they won't fully colonize. I flipped the jars upside down and have been incubating them in darkness at 85 degrees. Is there anything I can do to help speed this process. And also if these jars do stop growing can I still case them and grow shrooms? Thanks for the help

i've birthed cakes into the chamber that weren't fully colonized and they went ahead and colonized fine and fruited-out.

You can definitely case them even though they are not fully colonized. I would not fruit a partially colonized cake though. Your begging for contaminates. When you case partially colonized cakes, you at least have the protection of a casing layer.

just make sure not to inject too much as you will throw off you water content. 1/4cc to 1/2 cc per hole is plenty

Do you have tape covering the holes? I used to cover my holes, and the cakes would stall because of no air exchange.

Maybe poly-fil. But im pretty sure cotton would be more prone to contams.

more spores does not mean faster colonization, in fact it can likely mean slower colonization. more spores means more substrains germinating and fighting to colonize the substrate first. it only takes two spores to make a million shrooms. your problem was air exchange, next time use pollyfill or tyvek. i also made that mistake my first time with taping the jars shut. first and only time i used tape on my jars.

or use a dry verm layer. flip the jkars upside down and that might help. C02 is heavier than O2

I had some EQ and A stall in jars, so I cut out the uncolonized parts and spawned the rest in H poo. They colonized the poo very quickly, growing more in a week than they had in the previous four. I think mine stalled because the BRF/verm had been too tightly loaded into the jars. My next batch I made sure were loaded very loosely, and they colonized the jars quickly and completely within a week.
