Heating / Humidity Question
    #430366 - 10/19/01 10:04 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I've recently moved my terrarium setup to another location which is in a somewhat cooler location.

I have used a heating pad under the terrarium, but it seems to dry out my cakes / casings but still kept the humidity at around 95%.

I would like to know what the best way is to heat my tank and if it is a fishtank heater, can it be used dry, or do I have to submerse it in a cylindrical container of water? I already have a 3" diameter x 9"L cylinder holding water with an aerator stone inside to give humidity, which holds my humidity at around 75% - 80% - not quite high enough to be very effective in growing these little buggers, right?

So what I need is the best way to heat without pulling down the humidity as well as provide proper air exchange.

Thanks for reading this y'all

A flourescent light or two sitting directly on top of your terrarium works well. You can drape some aluminum foil, mylar or plastic sheeting over the top.
Never used a fish tank heater, but they do need to be submersed.

My friend uses a fish tank heater and it is not submersed and it works just fine. She began with an 8" 75 Watt and for her new terarrium she has a 10" 100W. In a half gallon pickle jar with a bubbler, it works like a dream. Fuck perlite, fuck humidifiers. :)

Well, yes. For my 20 gallon terrarium, I use two, two-footers. This raises the terrarium temp from 70 (abient) to 78 inside my terrarium. I drape a sheet of thick black plastic over the light fixture to hold in heat. At night, another sheet goes between the terrarium and the light. The light stays on 24/7.

NO NO NO...... A fish tank heater is a wonderful thing. (when in water)
My fish use one to incubate the jars at the right temp. along with in the terrarium. But take it
from my fish. No water means fish tank heater reaching temps well above 200degrees. If you or anything else touches it there will be a problem. Along with that if for somereason water all of a sudden gets on it you will have a glass explosion all over the place!!!!!!!!!!! MY FISH WANT YOU TO BE CAREFUL AND NOT GET HURT!!!!!!!!!!! Be good
