superior people
    #4305151 - 06/16/05 09:16 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I've often noticed how some people in suits (R) look at me like I am a lower man, or even like a threat

to be more specific:

Once I went to a bank to change some local currency into dolars (to send to US to buy something over the net) I wanted only 13 dollars.
It was a fancy bank, you know everything clean, looking like some kind of spaceship movies set, feel guilty for walking on the floor, and lots of people with plastic faces and suits.

The bank was empty, and there was security taking a walk around, and as soon as I went in one guy jumped from his workplace, measured me (like security folks did) and ask me what do I want.
I said, I'd like to change to 13 dollars. They looked me strange (they were expecting something like 100 euro or 100 dollars) and said they don't change money over there. They looked at me as If I was going to steal something from them and run away.

Similar scenario happened in a couple of more fancy banks that day, so I noticed a pattern.

and why?

because I was not dressed well, had a cheap jacket, running shoes (or whatever they are called in english) and some old pants.
And of course, I wasnt all smooth and had a tidy hair as they did, I had beard and longish hair.

I notice how I always look suspitious to security and people like that.

The paradox is that all the big stealing in this world is done by people who are well dressed, have tidy hair, and are shaved. Those are the ones who steal millions in gloves (in a clean indirect way).

That's not a really a paradox.

You looked out of place. They treated you as such. Pretty standard and understandable.

The paradox is that, those people that look out of place to them are not the ones that steal from them

And what kind of nonsense is it dressing up for going to a bank?
A bank is a public plase, like a public toilet, or a meatshop

That's really not true.

The people that successfully steal from them may look more respectable than you but the idiots that run into financial institutions with shotguns are typically your average Joe. It may suck but it's reality. Either get used to the extra hassle and deal, conform, or avoid it altogether. It all depends on what YOU value. Fuck the bank.

The security guy is just doing his job. You're not being oppressed. They do the same thing at shopping centers.

Yea, they do, but it wasn't always like that, at least not around here.

I don't really care about banks, like you said, fuch banks, but what I don't like is a mentality that is behind those store window manequins in suits. A lot of them actually DO consider you to be less human than them.

And I'm not really all that poor even, I could dress up like them and be all smooth and shiny, but I don't want to, I want to be what I am.
I don't need to explain myself to anyone for wearing long hair and beard, because that is how humans look by default

And "respectable" is relative. To them, I don't look respectable, and to me, they don't look respectable because they look fake.

I think there is a lot to be said about the automatic evaulation that people make of others based on the way they look, dress, etc... People process information through "schemas" in that we group associated information together in packages so that we can easily and efficently process our surroundings without having to think too deeply about it. This probably had the evolutionary advantage of surviving in the wild.

The downside to all of this is that it is the cause of racism, gender oppression/repression, and other forms of bias where people inherently judge others on a specific basis.

When these people are making these judgements on you (and sometimes it can be in your head, not saying this was, but it can be at times), they may not even be consciously aware that they are doing so. Still, the very idea of people considering themselves to be the best of all humanity and basing that on affluence and the way they dress is very contradictory. Anytime someone thinks of themselves as better than someone else, they are doing something which really shouldn't be considered a positive attribute.

--------------------
The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

This sounds like to me a defense mechnism. Isn't it also making a judgement on them because of the way they dress, to a certain extent?

This depends on whether or not you are saying they look fake because they dress up, or if it's because of the way they're treating you.

Well they look fake to me because they they act so much, and hide behind the gold and the cars and fancy clothing.

I have found that if you dress like those people and act like them they are so stupid that they will think you are one of them and treat you accordingly. Learn this trick to get your way with them...it is also great for laughs. If you use this trick while functioning as an effective person, you can rule these people.

They looked at me as If I was going to steal something from them and run away.

Sounds like paranoid projection to me. Please post a photograph of such a look.

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie
