small caps?
    #4305098 - 06/16/05 09:06 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

does anyone want to guess as to why the caps on the far right tray are so tiny?

strain is amazon on wbs cased with jiffy.
the other two are gt and ks on horse poo cased with jiffy mix as well.
the quandry to me is if it was light, air ect.ect.  the other trays would be affected as well, right. i dont know  any ideas are good ones.. well maybe...

I am far from an expert, and am relatively new at this, but if I were to guess I would say poo is the first difference, and strains the other. GT's seem to have decent sized caps, and poo is known for it's fruit size and potency assist. When the Amazons mature a bit more, perhaps then they will spread a bit.

Substrate and substrate mass are #1 contributors to shroom size / development in my opinion, before optimal casings, air exchange, etc. So my guess is your substrate is lacking on the far right jobber.

wbs is not a good choice to case as it is for a spawn if you want to case some grain case rye!!!!!!

You really answered your own question. One with small caps is WBS. Two with bigger caps are Poo. Wbs is great as a spawn, but as far are by itself, it is rather lacking nutrient wise. Poo on the other hand is full of nutrients. I did some EQ's on WBS and Poo. The ones on Poo were 4-5 times the size. The Poo is the difference,IMO.

well it sound like we all agree. i'm suprised! this is my first time to grow amazon so i thought they would be more impresive. not wee little girly caps. the stems have potential but the caps are starting to open already. i guess next time i wont be lazy and skip the h poo!

If it makes you feel any better, I made a casing out of WBS at a depth of 2" a little while back, just for fun. Tiny toothpick shrooms with veils breaking at 1-2". It was extremely lame, but a good lesson in the proper substrate and reinforcing how much I like to work with horse poo as a substrate. It happens.

A carpet of pins that look good, but only grow into tiny fruits is often related to a wbs, rye or combo substrate that looks colonized - but is exposed to fruiting conditions before 100% fully colonized. The whole substrate isn't feeding the fruits, just the top layer of grains.

Whatever the case, I prefer a h/poo or compost substrate over any wbs/rye/grain as a substate, simply because it has primo nutriants, soaks up moisture well & can be rehydrated very rapidly, after flushing (for that second flush).

Fruits after all are 90% moisture.
