What phone number do you plan on leaving?
If this happened to me; I'd call my lawyer/cops to see if I could bring some sort of charges up against for hacking into my network. Then I'd call tech support and have them help me secure my network for free.
j/k. In all honesty though, I wouldn't pay the money. Be careful as some people might store sensitive information on their comps and be a little pissed. Of course, you would think those that had anything like that on their comp would already have it secure. I'd advise the scheme but hey, you may make some cash.

its just an offer... no different than sending someone a fax in reality.... i mean open phone line to acess, open network.. same deal ya know?
i was going to get an unregistered cell phone or just leave an e-mail. although im sure that some people will call right away while im walking down the street with my laptop... so that will work good.

This is VERY illegal. Just because you hack someones network and don't do any damage doesn't mean you aren't breaking the law.
Combine that with a request for money and that's extortion.
If you want to get into computer security, put an add in the paper or something. Of course, that's not the fun way of doing it, but alot less illegal.

just asking what you all think. this is a pretty grea area legally if you ask me. i was pulled over, (well i was allready parked) while using someones wireless network in town. the cops didnt understand how i could be on the internet wirelessly... and thought that i was using it as an excuse to pick through peoples garbage and commit id theft. a car search later, they let me go.

why? i can use their network, and get into it and print a page on their printer, i think that is all the qualification that the network owners will need... really if they have an un-secured network.... then they dont know shit, and im as pro as they are going to get.

yeah that would be with a physical entrance to your house. if i send you a fax and it prints on a phone line that you had connected, its business.

The law's pretty specific about this. Any unauthorized access to a network is considered illegal. Even open wireless access points/routers. Lack of security doesn't justify anything, let alone an attempt to sell your services.
As for what I think... About the only services you're going to be selling is this for a pack of cigarettes once you find yourself in a federal pen.
If you know enough, work as a freelance consultant for home users. If you're worth your salt and charge a reasonable fee, you'll have more than enough customers through word of mouth alone. No need to resort to something that will just get you nailed sooner or later. Even with a throwaway cell, all they need to do is set up a "consulting session" and sting you when you arrive.
Take it easy.

what law is that, i would like to see the actual text on it. im sure that it was drafted for a corporate sort of level thing. and that it would be a federal law.....
and when they setup their networks the instalation wizards will ask you if oyu want to set a password and that if you dont your network can be acessesd, legaly that could be an arguing point in court that the acess was authorised.

Certainly: http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cybercrime/1030NEW.htm
And no, the terminology used in the law states: the term "person" means any individual, firm, corporation, educational institution, financial institution, governmental entity, or legal or other entity.
Whether the entity happens to be corporate or a private individual, it is still considered a felony due to the use of a wire which may transmit data over state lines.

No, unless it's specifically authorized either through written or verbal consent, you're not going to get far arguing that authorization was implied. That warning to a network user serves as just that, a warning.
As someone else used as an example, just because someone chose to not put a lock on the door won't give you any legal standing for breaking in and leaving a flyer.
I'm not going to say to take my word on it; I'm through with IT/IS. Talk to a lawyer or someone who still works in IS. There's no legal grey area in what you're talking about, sorry.

Hmm...you're kinda in a legal gray area, methinks. Better not try it - you could get some grief from it....
