Two PETA employees arrested for animal cruelty

Associated Press

AHOSKIE, N.C. - Two employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have been charged with animal cruelty after dumping dead dogs and cats in a shopping center garbage bin, police said Thursday.

Investigators staked out the bin after discovering that dead animals had been dumped there every Wednesday for the past four weeks, Ahoskie police said in a prepared statement.

Police found 18 dead animals in the trash bin and 13 more in a van registered to PETA. The animals were from animal shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties, police said. The two were picking up animals to be brought back to PETA headquarters for euthanization, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said Thursday.

Police charged Andrew Benjamin Cook, 24, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Adria Joy Hinkle, 27, of Norfolk, Va., each with 31 felony counts of animal cruelty and eight misdemeanor counts of illegal disposal of dead animals. They were released on bond and an initial court date was set for Friday in Winton.

Hinkle has been suspended, but Cook continues to work for the organization based in Norfolk, Va., Newkirk said. Hinkle has worked for the organization for a couple of years, she said. Cook, who joined a couple of months ago, was being trained.

Newkirk said she doubted Hinkle had ever been cruel to an animal and said if the animals were placed in the bin, "We will be appalled."
http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/myrtlebeachonline/news/local/11912098.htm

And, according to the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald, investigators positively identified nearly all of the dogs found in the dumpster as the ones picked up just a few hours earlier on Wednesday by Cook and Hinkle. The paper also quoted investigators as say that shelter officials were told the animals would be taken to Norfolk where they would find good homes.

PETA's Dirty Secret

Hypocrisy is the mother of all credibility problems, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has it in spades. While loudly complaining about the "unethical" treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, the group has its own dirty little secret.

PETA kills animals. By the thousands.

From July 1998 through the end of 2003, PETA killed over 10,000 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" -- at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. That's more than five defenseless animals every day. Not counting the dogs and cats PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 85 percent of the animals it took in during 2003 alone. And its angel-of-death pattern shows no sign of changing.

Year Received? Adopted Killed Transferred % Killed % Adopted
2003 2,224 312 1,911 1 85.9 14.0
2002 2,680 382 2,298 2 85.7 14.3
2001 2,685 703 1,944 14 72.4 26.2
2000 2,684 624 2,029 28 75.6 23.2
1999 1,805 386 1,328 91 73.6 21.4
* 1998 943 133 685 125 72.6 14.1
Total 13,021 2540 10,195 261 78.3 19.5

* figures represent the second half of 1998 only
? other than spay/neuter animals
? skeptical? click here to see the proof

On its 2002 federal income-tax return, PETA claimed a $9,370 write-off for a giant walk-in freezer, the kind most people use as a meat locker or for ice-cream storage. But animal-rights activists don't eat meat or dairy foods. So far, the group hasn't confirmed the obvious -- that it's using the appliance to store the bodies of its victims.

In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA's Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them. "We could become a no-kill shelter immediately," she admitted.

PETA kills animals. Because it has other financial priorities.

PETA raked in nearly $29 million last year in income, much of it raised from pet owners who think their donations actually help animals. Instead, the group spends huge sums on programs equating people who eat chicken with Nazis, scaring young children away from drinking milk, recruiting children into the radical animal-rights lifestyle, and intimidating businessmen and their families in their own neighborhoods. PETA has also spent tens of thousands of dollars defending arsonists and other violent extremists.

PETA claims it engages in outrageous media-seeking stunts "for the animals." But which animals? Carping about the value of future two-piece dinners while administering lethal injections to puppies and kittens isn't ethical. It's hypocritical -- with a death toll that PETA would protest if it weren't their own doing.

PETA kills animals. And its leaders dare lecture the rest of us.

even if 85% were euthanized, that still leaves 15%
that they were able to adopt out into homes that
would have otherwise been killed by local shelters.

additionally, this slanted, ridiculous article makes no
metion regarding the details of their budgetary
outlays. it could very well be that they spend 28m
in re-adoption services and 1m on advertising.

but you don't know that...you were just looking for
another idiotic article touting your ridiculous agendas.

I guess if this makes you feel better when you beat
your dog, so be it.

31 felony counts.

31 dead dogs in the dumpster.

i guess you are fine with that, but not me. i would never do that to a dog. i have always buried dead animals. (respect)

Aren't PETA killing those animals because there's nothing else to do with them?

You anti-PETA people are on such a guilt trip. Deep down, you're mad at yourself for eating the flesh and wearing the skin of animals who have feelings and souls (I am also), but you take out your anger on the people who point out the truth. You take such offense to people who try to help these defenseless animals. They may be extreme at times, but the organization means well.

PETA's own name makes no sense. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Who's to say what ethical treatment is? My ethics say it's fine for me to kill an animal and eat it. I feel no remorse or care whatsoever. And I most definitely do not believe animals have souls.

I think dumping the dogs illegally is appalling, but the
article focuses primarily on the fact that they wind
up euthanizing many of the animals they give a second
chance to.

what's quite interesting to note is that even adopted
pets had it better up until september 11th.

I don't think we should be blaming the entire organization of PETA for this incident, should we?

cb9fl: I could never prove the existence of a soul in a animal or even a human, for that matter. But the same thing that makes me think that I can feel a person's soul makes me think I can feel an animal's soul. I think of animals as another part of me just as I think of you as another part of me. You're both part of a central energy source that is experiencing itself in innumerable ways in a world of relativity.

If we all lived the way PETA wanted us to we would all be vegan, there would be no ownership of domestic pets, the pets we now own would not be eating meat, we would have feral cat colonies...the list goes on. They are unreasonable and blind IMO. They would like for all the pretty animals to roam free but in todays society that is impossible. I really dislike PETA.

Leary, I love you, but I don't know where you're getting this. I've never felt an instant of shame over my carnivorous ways. We were designed to eat meat, man... And I don't take offense to people who point out anything. Yap all you want. But don't sabotage shit. Don't throw paint all over people. Don't make shit up. Don't con my roommate into letting you into my apartment so you can start preaching about the leather couch and the eggs in the frig.... Also, Leary, don't defend an organization by using a statement that could be applied to cult leaders or libertarians or people who blow up abortion clinics. PETA is extreme because countless uses of flawed logic have forced it down that path. It can't support the ideals holding it together.

If we are designed to kill animals because we have a short intestinal tract and canines, then we are designed to be the bringer of the end of the world because our brains created the atom bomb.

I have extreme dislike for PETA because they insist on preaching the right way to life. PETA makes vegans and vegetarians look bad, but I believe that PETA was created as a defense mechanism opposed to the assholes that insist on shoving T-bone in your face.
