Is it a bad idea to spawn a spent BRF casing to H-poo?
    #4304383 - 06/16/05 05:55 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Anyone? It's had 3 very beautiful, happy flushes, and if the fourth doesn't happen soon, I am considering this a possible route, any good reason why I shouldn't be?

err, well theres not much nutrition left in the cake, which might mmean the mycellium could be incapable of further growth, but i find it be be rather unlikely...

try it. start it with a small amount of h/poo, and if it works, break that lump up and spawn it to more h/poo. if it does work and you dont do it that way i think it will take much, much longer. good luck.

Under his instruction, I taped drumsticks to his head and turned him into a sort of mummy, or perhaps a caterpiller in a cocoon. He remains this way for about three hours, making bizarre noises, pretending to be a new species that must learn to walk and talk and eat, etc. And he communicates with other life forms by way of the antennae on his head. Eventually we jam a tube from a waterbong into it's mouth and figure he's learned all he needs to know.

That's exactly what I was thinking.. I feel as though, the mycelia is senscing due to lack of nutrients in the Casing, so H-poo should supplement that, and bring it back to life.. Theoretically. I will try it in a few days, if it doesn't pin again.

how thick is your substrate layer? (or how thick was it to begin with?)

if its only like 1" i'd say do it now, before it pins.

The spent cake would be weak and be more susceptible to contams. It would be best to use a fresh strong substrate as spawn. Not only does it need to be strong enough to colonize the poo but also still fight off contams while doing so.

If you want to try something with spent cakes, try an outside patch of some sort.

what about spawning after first flush?  and respawning (just enough to keep the  sub depth up) after every flush after that?  you could keep going for a looong time that way if it works

That's a nice idea.. The casing is KSSS and I have an outdoor bed of KSSS that's not totally colonized yet, mebbe I'll just toss it in with the KSSS pit..

I was going to attempt just making a casing out of some cakes after their first flush, KSSS also, lol. Those were the reasons I was told it probably wasn't a great idea. But, if you got the poo to spare, make a small casing with a spent cake. Let me know how it goes.

Using a spent cake/casing to spawn Horse Poo works! I am doing this right now. I thought about the containment's so i spawned a 50/50 mix to start with to give the mycelium the upper hand. A few days later once it was fully colonized i did the same 50/50 mix. For the final mix i did a 75/25 HP to spawn, which has taken 6 days to fully colonize. I will be fruiting it in a couple of days.

Well... I spawned it to H-poo last night, 1part poo, 1 part casing.. It's incubating right now, I'll keep you folks posted..

I would've done the outdoor patch, but I already got plenty of them

O.K. It has been exactly one day, since I broke up the 1" casing (that had gone through 3 flushes), and spawned it to 1" h-poo.. Today it is 90% colonized, and already showing primordia.. I'll probably case tomorrow morning, and toss it in the fruiting chamber..

So far, my consensus is spawning an old, tired casing to poo works excellent, so long as you don't use more poo than you have casing.. That's fine by me though, because each time my casing gets old, it will double in size.. At least until/if it gets contaminated..

I'll keep you folks posted!
