Media Antibiotic
    #4297836 -

Has anyone used this before or know any more info about it?

"Autoclavable. For invitro use only. Not for ingestion. Add 1/20 gram per liter of agar media prior to sterilization. Prevents bacterial growth while stimulating mushroom mycelium. Highly recommended. Not for prolonged use. 1 pack (1/20 gram)"

It's probably gentamycin, the only autoclavable antibiotic I know of.

I was just curious because I havent been able to find much information online about it. I found a ton of info about gentamycin. Wouldn't one need a prescription for gentamycin?

Is this a pretty popular sustrate additive? Does anyone here use this when preparing jars?

thanks.

Antibiotics shouldn't be used preemptively.

Antibiotics treat the symptoms of contamination, not the problem. If you have a contamination problem, perhaps because of sloppy sterile technique or a dirty grow room, you should improve your technique or clean your grow room.

Trying to fix a contamination problem with antibiotics will select for antibiotic resistance in the vector. When that happens, antibiotics will no longer work and you'll have an even bigger problem then when you started.

Use antibiotics very sparingly and only when you're sure all other measures to block contamination are optimized so you don't end up with super-bacteria roaming your lab.

Just my 2 cents.

1. No

2. No...you don't use this on substrate.
You use this with agar...and transfer to non anti-bacterial agar as soon as possible.

3. No...read #2.
