adding vegative oli to the horsepoo?
    #4302927 - 06/16/05 09:01 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I have heard of adding vegetable oil to compost, but can it be added to just horsepoo with good results? bigger yields i mean?

I doubt it very much. I have heard hemp seed is a poor substrate due to the high oil content

You add a shot glass of vege oil when your soaking the horse poo to a nice sized batch of poo, like 20 pounds or so.

Do you personally add vege oil, or just know how it`s used? if so do you get more contams? do you get bigger yields than without?

---

Anyone else using it? and how much?

>Do you personally add vege oil

I personally do, have added a shot to every batch I've done.

> if so do you get more contams?

I have yet to see a mold on horse poo...never had it happen. I have had half of two batches ferment...but that was due to other reasons (poor air exchange, and to hot and to wet)

>do you get bigger yields than without?

I never tried it without so I wouldnt know. If you dont use it, you can compare my yields to yours

>scat what is this supposed to do?

My best guess, is makes the poo kind of break up better and absorb moisture better. But I really dont know for sure.

So why do I do it? Cause agar told me to

I checked my records....

Agar sez:
"Single shot glass (1 oz) of V/oil to a large poo pot. A little more or less doesnt hurt, so long as nothing feels oily. "

i sent agar a pm about this adding oil and this was his reply:

A VERY small amount of vegatable oil - thouroghly mixed into a high fiber bulk substrate creates Flocculation points, that create bridges for myc to cross over rapidly from one point to another point, helping the whole mass to colonize faster (sometimes 5 to 10% faster). It also adds premium nutriants that would not be there - otherwise.

Some bulk edible growers - add it to compost, just before spawning - for the same purpose.

Only add in small amounts, he said you can have too much.

thanks agar.
gotta give it a try.

Stamets says it's a common tek for bulk edible growers.. He lists a few kinds of oil you can 'supplement' the bulk spawn with..
