Terrarium Size Affect Mushroom Size?
    #4302847 - 06/16/05 10:25 AM (12 years, 10 days ago)

Does anyone know if the size of the terrarium affects the size of the mushrooms you will get?

For instance with a snake the bigger the tank the bigger the snake...

now the reason i'm asking is because i just recently grew 6 1/2 pint jars of SA strain. Everyone on all the chat rooms told me that the SA strain gives off enormous fruits. I haven't grown anything bigger than 6". I have had decent quantity but not size and i'm wondering if it's because my terrarium is small as it is only about 14" tall.

I'm pretty sure that the size of the terrarium has nothing to do with the size of the fruits. The depth and type of the substrate seems to make more of a difference. If what you want is bigger fruits you should take those cakes crumble them and put a casing layer on top of them (you can find several teks for doing this here) or if you really want big fruits start reading up on bulk. I have only fruited pf cakes once and was disappointed with the results.

it shouldnt effect size at all except if you have a bigger terrarium there is more oxygen available to the fungus, therefore making fruits grow a little faster.

By the way, snakes dont get bigger just because of the size of terrarium you put them in, that has nothing to do with anything.

From my experience terrarium size isn't an issue substrate is an issue though. I assume these pints were pf style cakes brf? From everything I have read to get the largest fruits h/poo would be the way to go. Using a casing tek with the cakes will also help you get larger fruits. Enjoy

substrate depth will affect fruiting size, it also depends upon all other factors being right. temp, air exchange, humidity, amount of light.
you could have a very deep substrate and poor conditions and get little shrooms.
good luck

well for the most part the shrooms aren't small but aren't "Huge" by any means. i would say that on average the stem is 4 inches and the cap is an inch. and each cake has produced approximately 10 mushrooms of this size a piece.

the cakes that i dunked aren't done yet so we'll see what those end up producing.

sounds average for cakes. can't expect giants from a cake.

That thing aboot the snake is totally not true, if you keep a snake in a 10 gallon tank, it will quickly out-grow its tank.

very well said!~

optimal growing conditions is the key.

also the type of substrate being used...is a major factor.

and your casing layer also comes into play.
