Sound Cards
    #4302610 - 06/16/05 06:20 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I want to hook up my laptop to some PA system speakers to play mp3s off of at my wedding reception next month.  Will I need to buy a sound card or if I'm just playing mp3 quality is there not much of a point? I don't quite understand the point of sound cards and an initial google search didn't bring up what I was looking for so I thought there might be some good knowledge in these parts.

a "soundcard" is an actual physical device
that puts out the sound.
its the device you plug your headphones or external speakers into.

if you can already plug headphones into your laptop,
then u already have a soundcard.

what you will need to hook up your laptop to your PA
is this cable:

"3.5mm to RCA stereo Y-cable"
(make sure its a "stereo" cable & not a "mono" cable)

http://www.google.com/search?q=3.5mm%20t...sa=N&tab=iw

anymore questions?

Sound cards are absolutely necessary for playing mp3's. However, your laptop already has one -integrated into the motherboard (unless it's a really old laptop). Whether you need a better soundcard or not depends on how good the integrated card is. Check out what the integrated card is, then we can help you more.

Right sorry, I know the laptop comes with a soundcard, I should have put what it is. The laptop is a Toshiba A65. The sound card is a Realtek AC97 (thats the sound card right, not a driver?). I doubt its much of a soundcard.

Thanks for the help

edit: It's looking like Realtek AC97 is the sound card, where do I look to find out what type of Sound card it is? When I google my laptop specs the sites just say "Audio Output: Sound Card"

So it won't sound crappy just plugging that straight into the headphone jack?

nope. i have an AC97 soundcard too ( i think)
& i run that cable to a PA to 4, 15" subwoofers.

sounds great, my neighboors love it.!

i suggest you keep the volumes low at 1st,
as this is a new setup to you,
to make sure you dont blo your speakers
until u are comfortable enough to turn it up.

Here's a quote from a review I found:

Quote:

AC97=Sonic Hell.....
Sorry but it's an ultra-cheap sound solution aimed at office pcs that maybe need to play Email beeps. It's the sound equivalent of WinModem, were a lot of the processing normally performed by the souncard is done by your CPU instead, with what passes for the soundcard on your motherboard being little more than a physical interface.

At it's absolute best an Ac97 card will be a major disappointment

My suggestion: try it out well beforehand, if it sounds crappy get something better.

Oh, and don't forget to update the card's drivers.

I used to run the on-board sound on my computer which I believe was the same one you had and thought hey it sounds just fine. Then in a fit of wanting to upgrade the PC as much as possible I got a Sound Blaster Audiology Platinum card, the difference is amazing. Everythign is so much richer and smoother.

I run the music through my home system as well and yea the Reciever does boost the signal but unless its getting that clear defined signal from the computer your missing out.

yea, without ever trying that, it will be good... soundblaster is the #1 company when it comes to sound.

if you plug it into your sterio and it sounds like shit, then buy that... if it's going thru your headphone jack, then make sure the laptop volume is low. If your going from a OUT (line out, or speaker jack) jack, then you dont really need to mess with your volume that much (maybe just dont max it out) the reason is that the headphone one is amplified, and the OUT is not (the volume kinda amplifies it a little but not nearly at the levels as the headphone jack at 3+)

thier's a ceertain mix of volume/pc to volume/sterio you want to achieve. Play with it, and if when the sterio/pa is at low volumes but sounds like shit, turn the laptop volume down. It will usualy sound scratch/shitty if your giving the sterio/pa too much juice..
