capital "punishment"

Why is it called punishment? As far as I know a punishment is an act that is supose to "teach" someone a lesson, like a kid, so that he doesn't do it again. (of course that is a crude and primitive way of dealing with children, but that is for another thread)
And what is the man who is sitting on the electric chair supose to learn, not to do it again, or what? He doesn't need to learn it, because he won't do it again, as a matter of fact, he won't do anything ever again, him being dead and all
So what kind of punishment is killing a man? It should not be called punishment because punishment is a form of violent conditioning, and you can't condition a fried brain, now can you?

The defination of punishment has nothing to say about teaching anyone anything. Check the dictionary.

In the US, at least, the system that applies capital punishment is called the Criminal Justice System. To some, an eye for an eye is justice.

To satisfy the need for revenge or to remove the offender from doing further harm.

In other words, no purpuse. It does not serve the society, nor does it serve the guy being punished. It only serves the violent minds of those who wish to punish

No, punishment can set an example and may be a deterant to others. And as I said it may remove the offender so he can't do more damage.
But generally revenge is a main reason. It could serve a purpose of temporarily making the punisher feel powerfull.

Then why does US have more percentage of crime than some countrys that don't have capital punishment? If what you say is true, others should learn not to do the bad thing, because they can get killed for it.
US has one of the harshest law systems in the world, so it should be the most peacefull country too
Obviously it doesn't work like that. Punishment only conditions the minds of crimilans that the rest of the country is not on their side, but against them, which can furthe distance them from the legit part of society

I think the quote is biblical.. I'm more of the 'An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind' camp myself, my point was only that Punishment is actually a grammatically correct term for Capital Punishment. Especially since one of the definitions of capital is: "Involving death or calling for the death penalty: a capital offense".

I never said the reasons for punishment were good or work or that I agreed with them. I was just thinking of how people would use punishment, to answer your questions.
