Casing ?
    #4296305 - 06/14/05 06:57 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

K, I've had my cambos cased for a few days in the TiT and moved them into the fruting chamber. When they were in the TiT i was covering the first spots of myc with casing mix. But look at these pics in the fruiting chamber, woudl you cover with mix or not

Thanks

Nathan

I would cover very thinly the thicker areas, I grow cambos a lot and the mycelium is very fast, still you might be Ok if you kepp rh and temp right

It's a little late to be thinking of patching while they're in the fruiting chamber. During the incubation period is where patching is best suited. While they're incubating, you continue to patch until the mycelium is poking through evenly, then fruit.

I have fruited casings that look like that though. My pinset wasn't the greatest, but I still got some 3 ounces dry out of the thing.

Wow, 3 ounces. I remember when I use to get excited about drying 1 ounce. Now I'm banging out 9-10 on every grow. This hobby kicks ass!

Nice work by the way.

I don't like patching and I never do it. Use a fork and disrupt the early-emerging mycelium. Do not patch. It's a poor practice in my opinion except after a heavy flush.

I have to agree with blue helix on this I find patching very overrated.

You are saying just stab the heavy white areas instead? How much should you poke at it, just a little or go OJ Simspon on it?

I see myc come up in a few spots and in the chamber it goes

Do not go OJ on it. Using a flame-sterilized fork, insert the prongs about halfway to the substrate in the middle of the mass and gently wiggle it to break the mycelium threads. You can do this in a few places in the mass. Then--and this is the important part--on the very top (about 1/4" or less) mix the mycelium up with the surrounding casing soil. Let's say you have an emerging patch the size of a quarter, mix with the surrounding casing the size of a playing card. Don't do this after you've introduced fruiting conditions for five days or longer or else you risk harming mycelium networks that would otherwise eventually form pins. To stop advanced growth, you need to bring down your humidity (likely it's 100%) and stop watering the casing so much.

This technique is a light spot scratch. By doing it you end up disrupting the network in a local area, but it quickly recovers reconnecting the pieces and forming an even more even network UNDER the soil and around the original early emergence. The time for the reformation gives the rest of the casing time to catch up, and in the end, you have a more even casing colonization. Even casing colonization is the key to high yield.

i'd just let it grow.
early pins are pluckable, (if they seem to be a problem to you).
patching gains you nothing.

if you thimk an even pinset is impotent , clone from the best fruit, and go from there.

I wish we could get a concensus on this one....I have done a lot of reading that talks about patching and have been doing so. May have only been a freak batch, but my last casings were side by side.....Case number one I patched. Case number two I didn't. Case number 1 had bigger first flush than number 2, bigger second flush, and bigger third. Case 2 also stopped flushing at that point and I put it to rest outside....probably will be slug food. Case number 1 overall had better flushes and more of them. This was in no way a controlled environment, and there may have been several factors influencing it.....I am just hoping others will share to get a concensus on this. Like all hobbyists, I want the best results from my efforts. In this particular situation, patching seemed to be the thing to do....but I look forward to hearing from others. I thank you all in advance.

I don't patch anymore either, since I started using the Single/Double Tub teks. The grow takes care of itself.

...not that you couldn't patch if you wanted to tho, right?

Id like to ensure an even pinset so I wouldn't mind kicking around some casing to make sure, even if it means opening up the tub one more time.
