Would you?

Say its december 8, 1941, and you're 18. Would you have enlisted?

If there were invading forces that had reached the shores of my state I would defend my homeland. However I would never leave this country to fight a war on foreign soil.

Yes.

I'm not an aggressive person but.......the Japanese did attack us.

If the Germans took Britain....they would be invading us next.

IMO it's better to stop the invading force before they get to you border.
Less civilian casualties that way.

There's a huge difference between fighting to protect someone you care about, and someone you don't care about...

Plus, the guy running at my sister with a bat would be closer in metaphor to someone invading my country. If the guy was beating someone else with a bat, and said that my sister was next, the analogy works better. :smirk:

True, but they were provoked by an extremely hostile US policy. Perhaps they wouldn't have attacked us if we were a true neutral.

First of all, that's just conjecture. Second of all, THEY COULDN'T TAKE BRITAIN. There is no way in hell they could have or would have attempted an invasion of the mainland United States. Hitler was an insane megalomaniac but he was not militarily inept -- he knew his limits to a point, why do you think he made such a diplomatic push to keep the Soviet Union out of the war in the Summer of 39?

Even WW2, the one just war that war-hawks turn to when they're cornered, wasn't that simple. Impossible to make such a blanket statement.

It's not my place to judge anyone here, but for those who say yes -- why? Just curious, 'cause there are a lot of different reasons.

Once they reached the U.S., I'd defend the country, but I wouldn't join the army under any circumstances.

Sure would have.

Why? Because I think that, unfortunately, we still live in a world where borders must be defended, violently if neccessary, from grave threats. In 1941, I think the axis powers were a grave threat to just about any country on the planet.

PS: I should qualify 'grave threats' as being countries that have displayed obvious intention to attack US soil, or have done so already.

well, seeing as how I'd be in Poland, I'd have no choice. Plus, I'd probably be dead soon anyway.

Yes. An easy decision to say the least.

True, but they were provoked by an extremely hostile US policy. Perhaps they wouldn't have attacked us if we were a true neutral.

Japan and Germany had goals of imperialism. It doesn't get any clearer than that.

So the United States should have attacked any country with goals of imperialism? I assume you'd have been fine with a pre-emptive attack on the entirety of fortress europe during the late 19th century for their imperial tedencies towards Africa. I assume you'd also be fine with an attack against ourselves (not sure how this would work logistically -- good luck!) for all the imperialism we practiced in Central and South America, The Carribean, The Philipenes, etc.

Nah. Only the ones that would be a threat to us then, or in the future.

I assume you'd have been fine with a pre-emptive attack on the entirety of fortress europe during the late 19th century for their imperial tedencies towards Africa.

You assumed wrong. Africa held zero interest to the U.S in everyway. We were not threatened whatsoever by Europes conquering of it.

I assume you'd also be fine with an attack against ourselves (not sure how this would work logistically -- good luck!) for all the imperialism we practiced in Central and South America, The Carribean, The Philipenes, etc.

You are silly!

Since the future is a subject of great conjecture, this line of reasoning could be used to justify the attack of any and all countries on earth.

It is not my case to make. Neither can anyone make (nor did anyone make) a valid case for attacking Iraq.
