Cigarettes: addictive or not?
    #4300054 - 06/15/05 03:35 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Something I've always wondered...
Addicted to nicotine?
You may choose only one

They are addictive, no doubt, but I am not yet addicted. I worry about for how long though...

I made this poll because I'm convinced it's 100% psychological. I've been a casual smoker for 5 years now, and have never once had a craving for a cigarette. There's been times when I smoked about 5 or 6 cigs/day, and then gone a couple months without any, and everywhere in between, without any problems.

I don't really get cravings for them either, I smoke when I'm really bored, or drinking. So sometimes it can be 1 cig 1 day and 20 the next.

Considering I can go for months without a cigarette, and don't feel any craving to have them, I don't think I'm addicted.

When I was young and a bit more stupid, me and a couple friends would smoke a cigarette or two after school back in the woods. I was probably around 15 years old at the time. We would take a few puffs and get the dizzy tingly feeling... it was great! A few weeks of this went by and I started to notice myself thinking that a cigarette would be really good right now... during class, or after eating, or any time other than when we were actually smoking. This is when I realized that cigarettes are indeed adictive. I had probably only smoked maybe half a pack total by this time. I managed to stop, but the other three friends all got hooked . Two of them still smoke to this day. Physically, nicotine is more adictive than heroin.

Not, maybe psychologically more addictive than heroin, but physically not even close.
The physical withdrawel symptoms of heroin are far more powerful than those of cigarettes. The concept of cigarettes being as addictive as heroin may hold water on the psychological level, but on a physical level they are two entirely different levels of suffering.

I am not talking about the physical effecst of withdraw... I am talking about brain chemistry. It has been studied and well documented that nicotine is physically at least as adictive as heroin, if not more so.

all i know is personally, ive been smoking cigs on and off casually since i was about 12... and ive never really felt addicted to them... i would only smoke maybe a pack every 1-2 weeks at the most times.... i would usually only quit cause my throat and lungs couldnt handle it, not cause i was addicted to nicotine... i never felt any real 'need' to smoke cigs. i havent smoked 1 cig in the past 6 months. and ive gone on longer breaks before

its the same way with both my bro's and my sister.. they smoke cigs casually, every once in a while.. but have neevr been hopelessly addicted like some people.. it must be somethin to do with genetics ... cause all i know is if i start smoking again i can quit whenever i want with no ill side-effects, cause ive done it time and time again

I've had the same pack of cigs for 2 months. I'll smoke one here or there when I go for a long walk, but I never feel like just having a cigarette.
