two questions
    #429972 - 10/18/01 11:46 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

first, i was wondering how much sterilaztion do i need to do for my first time growing (pf tek), right now im planning on using latex gloves, dust mask, and sterlizing substrate before in jars and boiling for hour and a half, will that be enough for my jars to colonize without contam? second, im low on cash and space so I am making a few Poor Man's Terrariums as my setup to start. has anyone used this and how well does it work? thanks for all the help and sorry for such a long post

First of all, you only need to boil your jars (on a LOW boil) for one full hour. Any more and you risk drying out your jar. I can understand you want to be super sterile but an hour is good enough. Me, as well as many other, share about 90% success with this. If you are low on cash -- dont go with the 2L bottle (poor mans) terrarium unless you *really* need to. Try to find some rubbermaid (or other) containers around your house (coolers, etc.) or purchase one for $5 - $10 dollars. Humidify these with perlite (cheap, good) and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Hope that helps.
