Growth arrest during fruiting of casing
    #4298202 - 06/15/05 07:05 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

My friend is using rye as the initial substrate. He cased a tray of well permeated rye (plastic tray, lined with foil, moist vermiculite layer on the bottom, then mycelium laden rye, then casing mix (verm, peat moss based potting soil, calcium sand sterilized together). After a week or so, small mushrooms appeared all over the tray, but then for several days there has been no growth (they're still small, not becoming full sized). He's keeping the tray in a box that's shut tight, with very high humidity (condensation on the walls), fanning and misting with water twice daily.

Any ideas why the little things stopped growing, and how to get them to start again?

G

You need to fan more than twice a day. Try a fish tank bubbler for a constant supply of fresh air. And the humidity does'nt have to be very high with a casing. As long as it's staying moist(very small water dropplets on the surface) you should be ok. Good Luck. Peace!
