Humidity Too High?
    #4295756 - 06/14/05 04:59 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

I'm using the standard PMP setup w/ BRF cakes. I've gotten a few 1-2 flushes off some of the cakes, but now they're all growing fuzzy mycelium all over them (it's definitely not mold). They've been doing this for over 2 weeks now and still no pins on this flush.

I've had this problem before, and am guessing that the humidity is too high. Will the cakes still pin with the fuzzy myc all over them, or should I go ahead & lower the humidity?

they will still fruit.

I like my humidity super high with pf cakes....98% usually.

what strains are you working with?

here is a Puerto Rican pf cake from many years ago...
that was grown with around 100% humidity...it fruited just fine.

you could put a few holes in your setup...then fill the holes with polyfil.
this would lower your humidity a little.

I don't have a hydrometer so I can't be positive, but it's REALLY high. If I were to estimate, I would say 95-100%; the standard humidity in my house is a little over 60% (I have a big clock with a humidity/temp gauge built into the face).

I'm using some B+ strain left-over from about a year ago.

Yeah, but they've never taken this long to pin before. Especially on the 2nd or 3rd flushes.

The fuzzy myc has just completely covered a few of the cakes. I think that I may just be freaking out because I haven't encountered this much fuzziness before. So there's no such thing as too much myc, huh?

not unless its cobweb mold instead of mycelium!~

---

Cobweb mold will grow like mad and become very obvious.
Cobweb mold is darker than cubensis mycelium... more of a grey than a white.
Once you have seen cobweb mold...it is very easy to tell the difference.
Regular cubensis mycelium can look an awful lot like cobweb until you know what to look for.

Here is a picture of cobweb mold.

Nah, it's mycelium; I think that I'll be fine now.  I just needed to be calmed down & reassured that they would still pin, thanks!
