FIELD JUDGING H/POO QUALITY

FIELD JUDGING H/POO QUALITY

If you intend to use horse manure as bulk substrate? You must learn to judge if the h/poo you have available to you, is suitable. Because, if it is not, your project is likely to fail due to bacterial bloom, or fermentation.

Fresh (green/moist/hot) h/poo is not suitable, without considerable treatment, simply because it?s content is thriving with microbial biological activity, & has a large amount of ammonia present within it.

For field gathered h/poo to be immediately suitable as substrate. It must have been exposed to repeated weather cycles of rainfall, air dried and/or sun dried time & time again. This natural process leaches away excess nitrates, ammonia & halts microbial activity.

Ideally, field gathered h/poo (ready to use as substrate as/is) should be intact, high fiber, bone dry, without perceptible smell - other than earthy & when crushed by hand or screened break apart into individual fibers as shown below.

Anything less, may subject you to failure, unless the h/poo is given further treatment of drenching, draining & air/sun drying repeatedly, until it is suitable.
