cap bruises ember/red, stem bruises black ?
    #4294425 - 06/14/05 09:05 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I jsut found a truely weird shroom to me. The stem bruises black, but i picked a small piece of the cap and the wounde bruised a redish ember color. It also had tiny black bugs eating tunnels through it. Anyone heard of this ?

Edit:
The upper stem bruises a faint darkred but quickly darkens into black.

There are several species of Russula that are noted for bruising that way. The various black bruising Russulas are considered poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

The "old man of the woods" bolete (Strobilomyces floccopusbruises) bruises a deep, embery orange to a smokey greyish-black, and sometimes (but rarely) both.
Need a better description.

I meant that the Strobilomyces floccopusbruises turns orange, then turns black. I reread my statement and figured people would think i was saying it turns "either orange or black".

Good point, L_M. That's another good possibility. If that's what they are, then they should have tubes under the cap instead of gills.

Happy mushrooing!
