WBS expansion --why
    #4293886 - 06/14/05 02:18 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

For 1 pint jars of WBS I filler up about 3/4 full after doing the following:

Soak for @24-36 hours
Simmer for 20min
Strain for 30min

Topping the jars with:
Tyvek----Metal Lid with two holes----Two coffee filters

After PCing, the jars end up full of WBS almost to the top.

Any ideas WHY it is expanding so much?
I know it will expand some, but after doing the tree S's it still expands so much that I can barely shake the jars.
Isn't that part of the purpose of doing the three S's?
This is causing slow colonization.

Thanks for the help all

Yep, realize that.

But the teks say fill 3/4 right?

That's what I've done- 3/4 full just like in 6T/agar's Tek.  Guess some seed absorbs more than others, because I know most people fill 3/4 full.  I will fill up less next time, just curious why I'm the only one having this problem after all the damn soaking and simmering and strainig I've done...  :mad2:

Well, ok not the ONLY one, but I haven't seen many with this problem.

Guess I'll start only filling them Half full.

I thought it was 2/3rds...

And I wouldn't use pints lol...

When you use quarts you really only fill it...well, it's about as much as a pint and a half...

My point - Get bigger jars...pint jars half full are a waste of time/money IMO.

When do they expand that far? During soak?

Yep, going to start some quart jars this week.  Enough with the pints.

After the soak, simmer, strain, I put them in the jars- 3/4 full.

Then PC.  After the PC, they came out full.  A little space in there, but not much.

That's strange lol...

o0o0o0o....Shit...Sounds like you pulled all the air out...

ARe they Vaccum sealed?

Whenever you take out all the air in something...well...

Saw this info.-mercial awhile ago...When it took the air out of the jar, the marshmellows got really big...

Maybe that's whats happening?...lol

Try filling em half way..go from there

Well, I did the lids just like agar has his little illustration with the Tyvek and coffee filters.

There were two 1/4 inch holes in the lid with the Tyvek underneath the lid.  No tape.  It wasn't vacuum tight.

I'm going to try them half way and see how much they expand from that.

Maybe the birdseed.  I used the Morning Glory from Walmart.

Thanks Gnostic.

Do you ever sleep?

The less you simmer, and the less you strain, the less water is in the seed (so the more it can absorb in the PC) and the more water is on the outside of the seed (to be absorbed).

Check my grain link in my signature for a few tips on how I do grain that may help, specifically not rinsing to let it steam off, and adding verm.

Do you put aluminum foil over your jar lids when u PC? I have recently been experimenting with different filter systems and on one batch of jars i forgot to cover with foil before PCing, and the jars took on a bunch of excess water from the PC. Also, if you're only using tyvek and a lid, u may want to fill one of the holes with silicone, as 2 holes promotes fresh air exchange (different than gas exchange) and could cause ur jars to dry out.

I personally never simmer WBS, i always seem to get too many cracked seeds once it comes out of the PC. Everyone does it a little differently though, so keep experimenting and u should figure out what works for you.

I never do, personally.

Heat expands hydrated WBS. Try 2/3rds full for better results.

I tend to slightly overfill mine, as I dislike wasted space. Then, sometimes suffer from doing so. As, sometimes they are very difficult to shake, thus colonize a bit slower.

>Do you put aluminum foil over your jar lids when u PC?
I do use foil over the top in fear that water will drop down onto the tyvek/polyfill which ever I'm using.

>2 holes promotes fresh air exchange (different than gas exchange) and could cause ur jars to dry out.
I use 2 open holes for the PC ride, but then cover one with tape after I inoculate. So really only have one hole during the incubation for gas exchange.

>I personally never simmer WBS, i always seem to get too many cracked seeds once it comes out of the PC
My first jars of WBS was done this way. Soaked for 36 hours then strained. (no simmer). When I noticed they expanded so much after PCing, I experimented the next jars by doing the 36 hour soak, but simmering for at least 20min thinking this would help. Same result.

I am going to try it again the way you pointed out scatmanrav. That does make sense.

Also going to take agars advice and use less seed. I was also trying not to waste space. I don't think it is worth it however.

I use 2 holes in lids, inoculate through 1 & tape it over. I don't use any foil cover, as an AA PC uses so little water, none gets in the jars.

#5 is after PC'ing 90 minutes @ 15 psi.

I put lid, then tyvek, then ring, yes. Its just so I can write on the tyvek, without having to use anything else.

I also do like agar, fill to much (more then 3/4 filled probably) and then they're a bitch to shake. Get a good work out going through and shaking a few dozen jars. Better to fill less...but it works if you dont.
