Lag between sterilization and innoculation
    #429355 - 10/18/01 12:52 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hello all,

This is my first post. I am also trying to cultivate PCs for the first time. My question is, due to time constraints I may have to setup my jars and sterilize them a few days before innoculating them. Does anyone know of a reason why this would be a problem. I am afraid I might be running the risk of contamination.

Thanks.

I had a similar probelm as you do. My jars sat for almost over a week in a rubbermaid container before I had the chance to inoculate them. Now all 12 of my jars are going strong, I think two more days and I will be ready to case.

At the least you'll get to see if the jars are contaminated before you inocc. Ive heard you should let them sit for 2 or 3 days to see if they contam, and I've heard that you should inocc as soon as they're cool. I PC my jars at night and the next morning it's ready to go.

Acutally, some suggest to do this (for first timers) if the jars contam then it is obvious that your sterilization techniques need improving. If after a week they are still fine, then go ahead and innoculate.
If they contam after that, you know hte contam was introduced post inoculation.

I just wanted to say that I agree with these opinions. I read somewhere that common mold (the single biggest threat to other compeating fungus is the green mold (penicelin) spore and it needs a good 48 hours in dark/moist enviroments to become active. If this is taken as fact, a wait of a good three days should be a good indication of bad sterlization techniques of the substrat/jars.
