syringes?

How can a person obtain syringes in the midwest? I don't know what to ask for at the pharmacy or if they will even give me anything.
I have been inocculating my substrate (brown rice) by throwing pieces of malt agar with mycellium growing into the jars. This technique was tottally improvised. If anybody has any ideas for how i can better use my mycellium, i could really use it.

That's the way I started. A FOAF gave me some agar plates with Amazonian strain growing on it. It was from the Homestead kit. so that's why I assume they were Amozonian. Anyway, The plates were totally dry! I mean powdery, dessicated mycelium. I said "what the hell, couldn't hurt to try" since my prints hadn't come yet. Boom! two weeks later, fully colonized jars. (after I shook them). So, if you can't find syringes just use prints or plates. But you can order empty syringes from a few vendors here.

thanks dude,
i don't think the mycellium plates are too dry yet. There are still about 9 or ten plates left. will shaking the rice and agar/mycellium always help? my friend did this with two jars and one was inoculated very quickly while the other never grew. That was the first attempt and hopefull the second will be much better............

youre in the midwest- go to a tack store (horses)... you can get the big syringes you need there... 18 gauge 1&1/2 in 10 cc's... horsies and cows need medicine. ::grin:: too bad in this hippie town theres no horses or cows. i shudder to think where the milk comes from.
gluck.
(pharmacies may sell them to you as well- the larger gauged needles and syringes are typically used for drawing and mixing injections- like fertility meds. btw, mant pharmacies wont stock the correct needles/gauge/cc's cos they dont specialize in fert/injections, many only carry insulin syringes- so your best bet is the tack store. or call around and ask specifically if they have the correct ones.)

Shaking the jars had always helped. I would just wait to see a little fuzz on top and then shake the hell out of them. now that I use the disks I don't usually bother. Another FOAF gave me five that were precut and used. I just PC'd them and they worked great. In most cases they colonize faster than a shaken jar with a plain lid. I'm saving the plates that were dry now and I'm gonna see how long the dried mycelium will last before it stops colonizing jars. I'm just keeping them in a drawer, nothing special, so this should be an interesting expierement. I know the plates were at least 6 months old when I got them and I have Inocculated about forty jars with them so far and all have colonized. this is over the course of about four or five months so the plates are now almost a year old and still viable. Now that I have some new syringes I think I'll set the plates aside completely for another 6 months and then try to innoculate a jar or two. I'm willing to bet they'll colonize. Anyone have any comments about how long dried mycelium will last?
