I dunno exactly, I think it depends on a lotta environmental factors.. It's easy to see though, it looks like a mycelium.

LOL, there are to many variables involved to even give you a generalized answer. You have to learn to judge it for yourself.
Green outside, or moist brown spongy insides isnt good.
Should be high fiber, intact, hardly any smell - except earthy, bone dry, white spec's / flecks from firefang is a good sign, very light individual muffin weight.
Pasture gathering can fool you. Top looks perfect, bottom in contact with moist soil isnt.
Pile gathering can fool you to. Outer crust of pile looks perfect, one muffin depth down, isnt quite right. But - you want a supply, so you end up taking some that is & some that almost is. The almost ready stuff is what can foul up the mix.

Yea.. I'm real lucky! My pile is huge, so I can just scrape stuff off the top layer.. I use all the questionable stuff I get on my garden.. Plants don't mind a lil' ammonia..
