This lime stuff is confusing me...
    #4291910 - 06/13/05 05:23 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

So we all should know that hydrated horticultural lime is what we want.  I thought we added it to make the soil more acidic.

I went to the store and bought a bag of Hoffman's Lime, its horticultural and hydrated... should be what I'm after.

Then I get it, bring it home and read on the label:
"helps reduce soil acidity"

WTF?

Then I did a search to see what should be in it and how much... found a lovely (as always) post by hippiechick. In her post she has a pic of the %'s.

I matched it up with mine and they were in the same ballpark, special attention to the magnesium amount (0.4% in mine).

It looks good but I can't get over the fact it says "reduce acidity." Errrr

I was pretty pissed considering I thought I bought the wrong stuff and confused myself in the process then I did a google and got this:
http://www.earthstongue.com/site/388422/product/46-1912396

That's the exact bag I have!  And the best part its for sale on a website the is solely for growing mushrooms!  So I'm friggin confused
I mean I really have no clue what to think...  I didn't think the same percentages of stuff could have a complete opposite usage... Maybe I'm in Bizarroo World.

Yes, it reduces soil acidity. Remember acidity is below 7 (neutral) on the PH scale. Alkaline is above 7. Molds love acidic conditions.

That bag you have bought is perfect for this hobby. As long as the total Magnesium is lower than 3%.

i always thought you used lime to reduce the soil acidity.. it is also a buffer to help "eat" the acidic waste that shrooms give off.

First off, peat has a ph of 3.5 - 4.5 to start. Making it acidic. Too acidic for most mushrooms. That is why you need to add the lime. To get the ph between 7 - 7.5.

If you realize peat is acidic to start, end of your confusion.

Actually, contams HATE acidic conditions. This is what makes peat a fairly " clean " casing material to start with. Doesn't require pasteurization because of its acidic condition. Unfortunately, mushrooms don't care for it either. Thats why it has to be buffered.

Well, good thing, you probably won't get any contams, lol. Your casing layer is going to get very acidic as the mycelium waste builds up and lowers it even more. Good luck.

AHHH

Thanks for all the help guys.

I know it probably looks like I haven't read anything on it but I have. You wouldn't believe all the contradicting things people have posted about PH that has gone unnoticed.

I think its because the 7 is neutral, not 0... And a lower PH means more acidity. I have also read that shrooms like an acidic soil, so that scared me when it said it would lower it.

But as HippieChick pointed out, Pete moss starts with a low PH... that makes so much more sense.

Just need some oyster shells or caco3... that site I stumbled on doesn't look half bad.

Uh! Where and the hell did ya hear that? That's the worst info that could be posted on this board. Trich absolutely loves acidic conditions. As goes any mold. The only reason trich has a prob with peat, is it's lack in nutrients. Very bad information there!

And I said most contams, didn't say anything about mold specifically.

Besides, this post is about peat and lime. Not Trich. I was telling him about peat, why it's a good choice for a casing layer, it's acidic condition, and lime and why you need to add it.

You think I could get away with just the lime I bought and not have to deal with the oyster shells? I really can't find any.

On the package it lists use for spring or fall. So I am thinking since it lists fall, it may have long lasting ingredients that can carry it out until spring. I have noticed a lot of other ingredients not mentioned on the bag Hippie has.

Could be wishful thinking tho...

Oyster shell is for long term buffering. As the mycelium fruits it produces waste that will make your casing layer more acidic over time. This is when the oyster shell will start to help. It's not absolutely necessary. Usually won't help until you hit your third flush. If your lime is basically the same only missing a few things, it should be fine to use.

You should say bacteria instead of contams. Molds are contaminates too ya know? Or do you? I don't give a hoot what Paul says about contaminates not liking peat. I've seen it first hand. It'll happen. I've had Neurospora eat a peat casing material to hell and back. That's a poorly written page IMO.
