what a waste of $120,000 (pls reply if you work in IT)
    #4291849 - 06/13/05 05:16 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Right, so I just graduated college in May, from a prestigious northeast US technical school. But I haven't gotten a job yet. While looking on careerbuilder and monster.com all I see is these jobs that require 3+ years experience, or a list of skills that I've never even heard of, let alone learned in school. Where the fuck are all the entry-level jobs in IT? Have they all disappeared? Do they even exist? Everywhere I look it's "experience required." Don't get me wrong, I have 3 1/2 years work experience, but they were all tech support jobs. And I sure as hell ain't working tech support again. So I've been spending the last two weeks straight learning every computer language and protocol that I see on these job descriptions, just so I can add them to my resume and say that I know them. What a load of bullshit. :mad2:

you should have been doing your entry-level work WHILE you were in college.

didn't you guys have intership programs?

you may need to move to more tech-heavy areas for more job
opportunities.

all's not lost...you're living in Bush's brave new economy...just
stick it out, stay dilligent and try as many friends, friends of
friends and acquiantances you can for hookups and interviews.

I'd rather not say what school it was.

afoaf: Yeah I did entry-level tech support stuff at 3 different internships. It was all bullshit work though and I didn't learn a goddamn thing.

Seems there are mainly two directions I can go in, software or hardware. Neither excites me but I can make more money programming I think.

I'm wondering... who here is in the IT industry, and what do you do, how do you like it, etc...?

Just out of curiousity, if you knew before you went to college what you know now, what would you have done differently?

you have FAAAARRR more options than that.

you may have to get in where you fit in under either
of these headings, but you can go so many places
in tech.

fuck, sales, people hate sales, but tech sales, hard
or software, can be very lucrative. and sales guys
need SEs, which get to be all the geek they want
with the extra spiffs from the sales deals.

keep on keepin on.

my only advice, whatever you do, make sure that when you see a bigger n better oportunity, take it. if you settle for a hardware/software thing, but u want that IT job (programming right?) then once youve worked a lil move over as soon as possible. dont stay too long in a profesion u dont want.
example. my dad joined the airforce so he could pay for college. after he completed his bachelors, instead of leaving and looking for a job with his degree, he stayed in the airforce. he spent 20years in the airforce, and he doesnt like the military system. and once he got out, all jobs hes been offered were related to the work he did in the airforce (airflight mechanic and mechanic management.) to this day he has never worked a job where his degree would have helped him, its all based around his airforce experience. (remember, a job with his degree could have earned him possibly twice the income he now has, thus the reason for my crappy car constantly breaking down and having to self repair it... :P)
dont make the same mistake. its something to dont notice till its too late.

I think what I really want to do is web design and web programming together, like HTML/CSS/Javascript type stuff but that's so simple that I'm sure it doesn't pay well. I'm more interested in design, but I don't have any eduational background to show for it. I don't *really* like programming, but I don't mind it because I seem to be naturally good at it. All I know is, I don't want to deal with clients or customers. I had enough of that with tech support.

eligal: thanks, my dad even told me that same thing.

my guess is... northeastern

Web design doesn't pay shit. Also, how will you do any design if you don't want to deal with clients or customers?

Also, why not get a job in just programming? You often get a starting salary of 50-60k and if you're really good at it (and you get lucky), you can be getting the equivalent of 150k/yr in 6/7 years. Alternatively, database handling things can go for 100k+ starting, but the job is boring and mundane as shit. Otherwise, programming would give you most of the time outside of work for whatever you want.

i design database driven web apps (using apache, mysql, perl, and a 'language' called WebApp (similar to php, but a hell of a lot better ) that i've helped develop). never been to school for it (will start university finally, 3 years late, in the fall - but to study anthropology), but make enough to live comfortably. it's a bit boring, and the whole working without human contact (the only other person who works for the same company as me is the owner, a very good friend of mine, who lives in michigan) can wear on you, but i love the freedom of being able to work anywhere with the internet (not to mention the whole working black not paying taxes thing  )

get an entry job as a jr sysadmin or programmer. work there during the day to pay the bills and start your own webdesign firm that you run by night. it will be a good way to get a feel for the webdesign fields while still feeding and housing yourself.
